Default Filter ???'s

I have a question: For those with Fatbob's with the forward controls did you have to disassemble the forward controls shaft to get the oil filter out or in? I'm getting ready to do my Royal Purple Change over and am switching Primary and Engine to 20w50 Cycle oil and switching the transmission to max gear 75/140 as well as 8mm chrome plug wires and the new E3 spark plugs.... Anyway before I start I'm just curious about the oil filter. the manual says I might need to but experience from others usually tells a definetive yes or no...thanks Jay

My first oil change, I did it without taking the shift lever apart. I got it out and in, but made a helluva mess.

My second oil change, I took it apart and it went smooth as silk.

I'd recommend taking it apart. If memory serves, it's a light torque, guttentight kinda situation.

I agree as above not worth the PITA only takes a min to take one bolt off. I still haven't found a way not to get a drop of oil on my bike when taking that filter off . yes I tried a plastic bottle, foil ect...

I'm fairly **** about dropping oil from the filter whether it be car or bike but what I'm gonna try is my punch to the end of the filter as low as I can get it and drain the filter before removing... I think it'll work to keep pretty and clean... thanks for the filter answers...

Hey Mike, that's a lot of good input that pretty well matches with my experience. Instead of punching a hole in the filter you might try cutting down a milk jug or 1ltr bottle and sliding under the filter. That'll catch most of the spillage, but you'll always get a little down on the front isolator. Just make sure to clean it well when your Done!

Yeah, QD Cleaner works great for the clean up, by the way!

Well everything went good Got my Engine 20w50/tranny 75/140/Primary 20w50 all changed out to Royal Purple Got my 8mm wires on and new E3 spark plugs all installed... Good advise on the 2litter bottle worked like a champ with a rag under it minimal minimal minimal spillage. The new 8mm chrome braided lines look great on her.. So after getting all this done it started pouring rain after being around 105ish with a heat index over 110ish so since it was raining I didn't wanna take her out so I let her run for around a half hour to do a leak check and all is well for now...

Also for the 5 Torx screws on the primary Im guessing most that have stripped them were using a T25 torx which fits but there is play so when I went up to westlake hardware I looked for a size between my T25 and T30 well they had a 20pc screwdriver that included a T27 and used that to push against the bit and was able to fit a closed ended wrench around it to turn and low and behold they came out and went in most excellent... just though I'd share.... thanks everyone and I'll keep everyone updated if my fuel mileage gets better numbers and how the performance is...

T27 is the bit. Most people change out those crappy aluminum screws with allen screws in either stainless or chrome. Glad you got through your first fluids change unscathed!
