Default Lousy Jiffy Stand

When I first got my SG custom, I remember posting that the only thing I didn't like on it was the jiffy stand. It seemed too weak for such a heavy bike.

Sure enough, it got me today. I drove home from work and was parking the bike in the garage and turned the engine off. I put the jiffy stand down and I usually have my left foot pressing it forward to keep it from sliding back as I turned the front wheel to the left. This time I guess I was not pressing forward enough with my foot and I could feel the bike slipping down as I turned the wheel. Before I could take corrective action, the bike laid down. What a sick feeling. I tried to lift it back, but much too heavy. Fortunately, there were a couple of Mormon kids walking across the street. I called them over and they graciously helped me lift it up. Just a minor scratch on the back of the mirror; other than that no problem....the engine guard paid for itself.

Moral of the story: be more careful with that jiffy stand and don't be in a hurry.

Wow...I'll have to be a little more aware of how mine goes down. It seems like mine goes past center and is more towards the front of the bike when it goes down. I usually give it a little nudge towards the front some more though. I'll have make a point to check it out the next time I ride. Thanks for the info!!

I think the moral of the story is: Get your jiffy stand down and fully locked forward before worrying where the handle bars are. It's a terrible feeling when the bike goes beyond 45°. Lifting a bike is easy if you know how to do it. Ask me how I know. Everyone gets to learn sooner or later.

My jiffy stand goes down to a 90° angle and not more forward than that perpendicular angle. I never felt it "lock" just pushed forward as much as possible. As I turn the handle bars, sometimes I can feel the stand moving back and try keep my foot there to prevent it.

I would appreciate it, 07streetbob, on advice on the easy way to lift the bike up. Thanks.

You don't feel it lock. When it's "locked" is when it's all the way forward and it doesn't spring back up. For mine when I put it up I move it back an inch or so and it goes up the rest of the way itself. I personally never had a problem with mine and I turn my handle bars all the time when I'm detailing up until I got my jack a couple weeks ago. Even when I go from full left to full right with the handle bars (that's when the bike moves forward) it has stay locked and the jiffy would just slide. I see them move bike all the time in the dealership and they almost seem careless when they do it and I haven't seen one go down. I'd say go to the dealership and with your bike being an 09 compare what they have on the showroom and see if there is something different between the two.

Did you get the jiffy stand spring recall done? I got mine done and it feels much better.

No, I had not heard about any recall of the jiffy stand spring. I should call the dealership and find out.
