The slip-ons sound different with different air cleaners and EFI settings too. I recently added the Heavy Breather and the download and the bike sounds different. (To me and two others who have commented on the sound, "better.")

Edit to add: had a nice long ride today. The sound of the SE slip-ons with the Heavy Breather is very very nice. I was surprised at the change in the sound, I didn't think it would be this pronounced. A tad louder, a bit deeper with a nice edge. I'm happy.

I have an old set of SEII(pre EPA) that I thought sounded great.. I just wanted the V&H one peice look(not slip-on). Took them off and set in the corner. I'll look tomorro and see what shape their in, I know they sound good, I just dont remember if I scraped them up very bad or not..
If their not too bad I'll take some photos and offer them up..
Here's an old sig pic with them on...

I don't get how some people think slip-ons are a cost-cutting measure. They can cost almost as much as a full exhaust.

The sound seems to depend on other mods you might have on your ride. I almost dismissed the SE slip-on for my Fat Bob when I heard them on another bike. They sounded exactly the same as stock to me. I'm glad I gave them a shot, because I love them on my bike. A nice, deep rumble at idle and cruising, but bark loudly when I get on it. I set off just as many car alarms as I did with the Cycle Shacks I had on before. I installed a Ness Big Sucker and O2 IED's along with the Stage I download... maybe they made a difference with my bike versus the stock-sounding bike I heard.

Thanks for all the input! My goal is to change the tone, maybe add a little noise, but nothing ear splitting. I also have a Ducati with Termis on it, and that thing sounds like music when riding it. I know I can't replicate that sound on my Wide Glide, but If I can just get something with a little deeper rumble that doesn't give me a headache after the first hour of riding....

Get them and if you do not like them sell them here on the forums. there is no way to know until you ride a bike that has the pipes you are considering. Plain and simple. I also agree on a full system, but it's up to you. There is nothing that cannot be modified to exactly how you want it on a Harley.

Just a note that the reason I went to a Rush 2.0 vs 1.75 is I thought the 1.75s were a little raspy, at least to my ear. The 2.0s deeper tone perhaps covers up the rasp, I dunno. They sound pretty good while I'm riding, don't know about what others hear or think except the neighbor says it now sounds like a good Harley. They are loud, but not as loud as his.

The tone does resonate in my helmet... and since music to one's ear is trash to another, an individual can either spend a lot of time at bike hangouts taking notes or spend much money swapping pipes to find just the right one. I think its not only the sound but the feel, which you only get live.

I have a set of stock mufflers with the baffles removed. If you're interested. I'll sell them to you for a slight fee.

Try the Vance and Hines Straight Shot slip on mufflers. I've used them on two other bikes and they definitely do the job. A lot cheaper than the full system and you don't need to screw with the fuel management system.

Hugh? I got my pre EPA Slip Ons for $100 on ebay new. I finally decided to go with Vance & Hines Big Radius a few weeks ago and they are $750 + for regular price. I'd say the slip ons would be a cost savings. The problem is, it's not a cost savings in the long run when you are not happy with the sound and end up buying a full exhaust.

Exactly. Check ebay and Craigs list. Lot of guys buy them with the bike and later remove them so you can usually find a set for 100-150 bucks. That's what I did and they sound OK to me. The old SEII's were too loud in my right ear. For 100 or so smackers it's worth your while to give the EPA approved SE's a shot. Remember to use new clamps though or you wil likely have a leak.
