Find a mechanically minded buddy with some tools and time. Buy him breakfast, lunch and dinner. Keep him hydrated and be helpful but not in the way.
Pay attention. Learn something and give him a lovely parting gift (case of beer, gift cert for dinner for he and his wife, etc).
Should be cheaper and more educational than handing your bike over to some shop.
