windsheild question
take your left arm, hand open, palm down and put it across your chest at 60mph, if that fixes the problem, go to www.jacksflaps.com guranteed to fix the wind and buffet problem
> The FX framed bikes induce this and little can be done about it short of putting ugly fairing lowers on
Initially, I purchased the Standard Height Quick Release Detachable windshield. At 6'0", on a Custom, I found my eye level right at the top of the glass and did not like looking through the glass at all. I sent it back and got the 'Low Profile' - same windshield, but about 3 inches lower.
It works great for me... My eye level is about 3 inches above the top of the shield giving me good vision without looking through the glass, the wind pounding my chest is gone, and for the most part, the wind rolls at the top of my helmet. Still a little wind in the face, but not nearly as much as without the shield. It has changed the ride dramatically.
I am considering down the road forward controls, which may allow me to sit even lower (I use a Sundowner), which might help the wind roll at the top of the head. My only concern about forward controls is that with a bad back, the slouch forward controls offers might be a problem for me.

Go to my website www.jacksflaps.com go to contact and tell me your height, weight, and general build and if you will agree to come back on this site and report to all the rest of us how it performs for you, I will GIVE you a Jack's Flaps "Aerovest" It is a new product that really makes the wind and buffeting go away and this is the best way I know to get the word out---jack
Well guys; cycleman50 has responded and the vest is in the mail. We should have his report sometime next week.---cheers ---Jack www.jacksflaps.com
I am cycleman 50 and I did NOT yet respond to jacksflaps offer. I just today got back to this forem. I have emailed jacksflaps telling him it wasn't me. The real cycleman 50.
Yes, cycleman50 just did email me and I'm pissed. I should post the guy's name and address on this board and all the other boards. That offer was made to cycleman50 and I re-offered him one only we are gonna do it a little differently so I know it is him. If any of you has been to some other dyna boards or HTT, you'll know that I am a straight shooter, not some quack. I have made these offers, at considerable expense to me, so that the word would get out that there is something that is for real that makes riding much more enjoyable and tested and reported on by rgular biker folks. Word-of-mouth is the best way as far as I'm concerned. I would like an email from the guy I sent the vest to and an explaination. To the rest of you, thanks for letting me blow off some steam---jack
Hey guys; I just confirmed the real cycleman50 and his vest will be in the mail Monday. The bossman of the board also contacted me and is upset too, so if the guy I sent the vest to reads this post, it might be a good idea to contact me. If a mistake has taken place then just tell me so and we can go from there and get past it. jack
I don't know what all the 'hubbub' is about here, but jaxdwg sent me a vest last week and I've waited until now to give you my report. I wanted to give a thorough review of the vest, and I can't do that without giving it at least 50 miles of testing in various conditions.
The vest was sent with only one condition... that being I return to this board and give a straight review, no strings attached. Here it is:
First of all, if you go into this thinking 'functional', as opposed to 'style', you might be in business. The 'function' of the vest is simple: to direct the airflow from below outward away from the rider's face. It does a pretty good job of that in my opinion.. not a 'perfect' job, meaning you will still feel some wind in the face, but there is definitely a decrease in wind in the face going at 55 and above when the 2 'flaps' are sticking outward.
I use a 'low profile' HD quick-release detachable windshield. My bike is an '05 Super Glide Custom with a Power Commander, Big Sucker Air Cleaner, and V&H Big Shots Staggered.
This particular windshield is very solid, but it also doesn't 'eliminate' wind from your face, but somewhat 'directs' it upward above the head. Not perfect, again mind you, but adequate and much better than without it. The look of the low profile is very sharp, too, in my opinion. It does greatly reduce the wind from your chest, which was my biggest concern. Because there was still a bit of wind blowing in my face, and jaxdwg offered me the vest at no charge and only an honest review, I wanted to give it a try.
The vest of jaxdwg would be useful, in my opinion, if you are doing heavy straight cruising and want 'functionality'. If I were doing serious freeway riding out here in Southern California, I wouldn't hesitate to wear it. Poppin' around town here and there though, I don't feel this type of vest is really necessary because I rarely go faster than 50 mph on the South Orange County side streets (radar guns pointed at you every 3 blocks).
Style: The vest looks fine with the exception of the 2 flaps on each side of the chest. The flaps are pretty large, and he has done a very good job of trying to blend them in with the overall look of the vest (the overall look of the vest, sans the flaps, is damn good), but since 'style' is important to me, the two flaps don't quite work for the 'look' I want. However, when you are cruisin' at 55, and the flaps are sticking out, no one cares about looks anyway. The idea is to direct the wind away from your face as much as possible, and in that regard, jaxdwg has hit it pretty good.
Lastly, I found it a little cumbersome pulling out the left flap. The right one popped out easily going at high speed, but the left one wanted to angle downward a bit. Maybe I was screwin' up... I'm not sure. I don't know if that hurt the performance of the vest or not.
Overall review: Out of 5 stars, I give it 4.0 for function and a 3.0 for style, making a total = 3.50
Definitely worth a try!
That's pretty good stuff, jax... and again, if you are crusing at high speeds and have a problem with wind from below knockin' your face around, this vest will help quite a bit. If jax could keep its functionality and improve the 'style' just a bit, I would be an even stronger advocate.

The hubbub wasn't about you, I did offer to give you one for a test somebody posed as cycleman50 and got a vest that wasn't meant for him. Anyway, thank you for the report, it is the honesty that I am looking for so folks can make up their own minds about the vest. Reports from several different riders will give the rest a good reference as to its effectiveness for them, thank you again and enjoy on the longer runs---cheers---jack
