I wouldn't know. I've only had mine for about 2 months now. The original owner never said what he's done with the tranny. (Also, mine is a twin cam, first year. Not an Evo.)
I've got a 95 Wide Glide, but I don't have any experience working on transmissions. I would scroll down to either the Evo Classic thread or the Transmissions, Primaries, and Clutches thread. What is it doing anyway?
I have a leak on the main shaft. It started when I put on new tires and got home and the tranny emptied out on the floor. Took it to a guy and he said the belt was too tight and the smaller shaft seal had walked out on the shaft. Seven hundred later I picked it up and it was still leaking. At first he tried to say it was engine oil from the base of the cylinders(another story) and it was leaking in the same spot. Wrong.
So he says he will make it right and I tell him I will purchase new seals, and we spend yesterday tearing into the primary again and replacing both of the seals on the main shaft. On the ride home it is actually leaking more. Talk with my uncle and he asked if he pressed the seals in and I said he used a screwdriver and uncle says that doesn't sound right. So I am out about 800 hundred now after first cost, new seals, and fluids. I don't really trust the guy to go back in so I am going to have to eat the money spent.
Sorta getting screwed over I think but I don't know of what else to do.................
Trannys are not to complex on Harleys find a friend that is a wrench and have at it. Seals and a dial indicator is all that is needed. One note from experience is if any of the gears have a hook on the end of them round it off.
