Not sure if its a problem yet (brand new 09), but if I shift to fifth at 50 to 55, it sounds like its lugging (or like lifter noise like when under load), but at the same speed in fourth, its revving. Kinda like theres no in between. Funny thing is that if I accidentally shift to sixth in the 50 mph range or a little more, the lugging sound isn't there. No torque in fifth until I get to 60 or so. Running stock pipes right now, so in fifth, I can't really hear how much the motor is revving and no tach. Normal?
no problems 7000 miles,I actually think when it comes to these drivetrains, the trannys are the least of our worries.Just a slight amount of clatter in fifth gear because of the gear being straight cut,i don't mind it at all, barely noticable,H-D must of got tired of hearing complaints, cause the 2010 fifth gear is helical cut.

Topspin,
You feel that you're revving high if you're in 4th at 55 for a long stretch? Not anywhere near redline high, but like you feel like you should be shifting up? My bike only has 500 miles on it and I don't need carbon on my valves this early in life if its really lugging.
Robertj74,
You saying that the 5th gear in the six speed tranny has been a problem? I get a lot of that clatter until I'm at/above 60. Is it because of lugging, or the way the gear is cut? I haven't heard of a problem with 5th until your comment.
