I think you might be a little insecure. You know who you are don't you? That being said, who cares what others think. If you want to ride with him ride with him. If you don't, don't, but don't base the decision on what someone might think.
I bet most people won't even notice how similar they are beyond the color. They probably will be thinking what I thought about the three years I was saving up for my bike; how cool it must be to cruise around with a buddy on a HD.

You'll be ok as long as you don't take turns riding double with each other with the passenger hanging on to the saddle horn.
