The front brake rotors on my '09 FDXF are warped. It still seems to stop just fine, and if I really get on them I can't feel it at all. However when I am just cruising up to a stop it is obvious what the problem is.
How big of a problem is this? Should I get them fixed right away or can I put it off for a little bit?
I bought the bike used and it has always had this issue, though it has gotten a little worse lately.
My guess here is that the previous owner was too heavy on the front brake.they can only warp when they overheat. They cannot be straightened so forget that. If this happens to a car you can put it off ,however being a bike I wouldn't feel safe. A little wobble in a tight curve could throw you rather badly. Only other thing could be wrong is the front tire, those fatbob tires are notorious for cupping.
If it isn't 2 years old the moco should cover the brakes. Good luck man.
Run the VIN past your local dealer's service writer to see if it's still under waranty. If so take care of it right away. If not... take care of it your self right away... and don't buy cheap rototrs off Ebay.
I think the best po$$ible upgrade is Lyndal composite rotors...have them on my FXDXT for 3 years now...excellent stopping, no warping, no dust and guaranteed for life as long as you use Lyndal pads (as if I'm going to try Kia pads on these babies???)
You also loose a bunch of unsprung weight...never a bad thing for handling.
Hi Russell6hp, I have an '09 FXD I bought new in January this year with 2000 mi. on it now and the rear brake rotor is warped. I ride in the mountains quite a bit and I think the rotor warped from all the downhill braking. Dealer did not want to cover it under warranty and I had to call the Moco myself. It was not easy but finally they agreed to cover it. After this experience I think I'm gonna have to baby this bike... maybe ride in the flatlands more often. I've been riding for 30 years and have had Hondas, triumphs, and BSAs and all ran for many years without a rotor problem on any of them. I think when I bought my Harley I bought the image and not the bike. Hang in there...with persistence and a little luck you can get your rotor fixed under warranty.
