the 1971 Superglide was a very new motorcycle, in fact if Harley would have talked to those of us that had been doing a lot with custom bikes they could have come out with a much better bike, the brakes were crap, the bendix carb. was crap, the seat was crap, and lets face it the AMF concept was crap, Harley Davidsaon brought to you by a boweling ball company>> But they did save harley from going under, for that I'm gratefull. as we all know Willie G finally went out and talked to people that were building custom bikes, and by custom I mean funtional bikes, not the way out stuff that is built today..We installed sporty front ends way back in the early 60s, we used disk brakes from some honda bikes, yep for mostly back yard mech. we did ok.., LOL but we also built some crap, it was called try it and see if you like it, all in all Harley Davidson has come a long way and is giveing the people what they want. lets face it most harley riders today have no idea where the muffler bearings are on their bikes, let alone know how to adjust a set of soild lifters, no offence ment to those that do know how. just the ramblings of one who has been there, done that..[sm=biker.gif]
I've got an '06 35th Anniversary Superglide, and I've done as much as possible to recreate the original '71 look. The only thing I can't seem to find is an aftermarket boattail rear fender. If anyone has an aftermarket source, please post. Yes, I know that I could get a bobtail, and I've though about it. Still, I'd prefer a boattail if I can find one.
This mod was done here in Auatralia to an 03 Super Glide. He took a mold from an original 71 and modified to suite an 03. Not something I would do but shows it can be done
That modern conversion is really neat but it really needs the FL style console mounted speedo and fatbob tank.
Willie G. went to the well one too many times on this concept. If the boat tail didn't work on the '70 sportsters, why would it work on a '71 bigtwin?!?
I've posted a lot of my FXDI35 pictures, search under my name "johnpiech". That said, I would like to have a 2 into 1 pipe like the original - and Rhinehart just came out with a real nice one.
I'm not a fan of the original boat tail rear end - or Jalo's, or rap video girls - prefer my asses small.
I forgot one thing - I did see in one of the mags AI, Vtwin - not sure - an FXDI with a current softail fender repainted that looked great. Splits the difference between the standard dyna and massive boat tail.
Designed at the same time as the boat tail were the Craig Vetter Triumph Hurricane trident Triple and my favorite, the Norton Commando fastback. These bikes hold up really well.
