Anyone ever go back to stock setup? I've ridden my FXD in stock form + SE intake and XIED's for the last 18000 miles. Loved the sound, the look, etc.. but always wanted to jack up the rear a bit to keep from scraping in tight turns. Got a set of long 14.25" shocks, bolted them on and found the rear muffler was right in the way of the bottom shock bolt with the new long shocks on. So, I wasted some money on the V&H competition series 2-1 pipes. Great exhaust and out of the way of the shock bolt. Looks great, runs great but it's damn loud. Changes the whole ride for me. Between the noise and the heat (no shields available) from these pipes I kind of dread going for a ride. I get ringing in my ears after an hour of riding and I'm seriously thinking of swapping it all back to stock.
For riding enjoyment I found stock is probably best. Same thing happened on with my old bike. Tried a bunch of mods and ended up going back to stock. Didn't learn my lesson I guess. Now I'll have a garage full of extra, barely used, parts ($1200) worth. What a waste.
I hear were you are coming from, i'm always afraid to make changes to my cars or bikes because I feel there is a trade off. yea i love for my motor to make some more horses, but I know it will mean a louder exhaust different A/C, maybe cams, etc. then will I be happy or windup like you wishing i didn't spend the money for something i don't really like in the long run. The only answer is to have 2 of the samebikes and modify one the way you want to and keep a stocker for pleasure rides lol, if only it was that simple
Very radical look with the long shocks, rear pack and exhaust selection. Not sure if you need to go back to stock, but rather some mild mods which would give you some performance improvements over stock without the loud pipes which you don't like.
There is so much out there to make the bike ride the way you want it to. Just a matter of making the right choices.
