A 2001 Super Glide was left in a garage with pool chemicals and got some splashed on it's forks. The paint was ruined and the chemicals ate right through to the metal. The question was, should the forks be replaced with chrome ones or powder coated? The cost to do either one was out of reach. So we decided to strip the paint off and polish the tubes. We had nothing to loose, but a little time and hard work.
The tubes were left on and all striping and polishing was done by hand.
I took some pics of the project and made a slide show. What do you guys think of the finished result?
wow man that does look awesome! I use a drill attachement and work my way up in papers for rotors... but for lower legs, i pull the leg and spin it on the buffing wheel... by hand works great but takes some time... great work man they look fantastic! hopefully we cna get together and put on some miles this summer
Thanks guys for the the good words. This was my first try at such a large polishing project. The rest of this bikes alloy was in bad shape. With some patience I was able to save it all.
It would have been a lot faster, if I had a machine buffer and pads, but I've always polished by hand.
Joe, great looking work. Where are you located in Elgin? You have a shop there? I could visit some time. PM me if you want.
Hey guys, I also have a Harley Blog. Haven't been able to keep it up like I would like too, but I try. I have a slide show of photos from my Harley Museum trip I took last summer. http://harleysareus.blogspot.com
I'm not trying to sell anything. I'm just sharing the love.
Good job. The fork legs are a common problem where I live (the beach). They kind of get sandblasted and the clearcoat they use on them will not hold up to it. when moisture gets in under the clear it starts to carrode the metal and it'll just spread so, I've had to do the same thing that you did.
I've only had my bob for a few months and it's already showing some signs of it. I'll have to polish them before too long.
