Default How "FULL" do you fill your Street Bob?

The other night before TS Ida hit us, I filled up ALL of my vehicles with fuel. Not knowing if we'd get slammed, I really topped off everything to include the Street Bob. After leaving the gas station I noticed a bit of fuel leaking out from under the fuel cap. Can you put too much to the point that it will slosh back out as you begin to ride after refueling?

That happened to me a lot (FXDF) until I realized I needed to push down (with the palm of my hand) while turning the gas cap.
If you use your thumb & fingers to tighten the cap till it 'clicks' then push down on it with the palm of your hand & turn some more...
it'll 'click' some more.

I always fill the tank to the bottom of the metal insert.

There is also an overflow which drains out excess gas from a tube that drips under the bike. It is useless to add gas past the metal rim at the bottom of the filler gap and I usually leave an inch under that. What is the sense in adding an extra 2 or 3 ozs. of gas anyway? Don't forget your bike is on the jiffy stand so the other side where the guage sits is all full. O and once the cap clicks it won't get any tighter regardless of pressure,it will keep clicking as long as your turning it,like a car gas cap it's ventilated.

It doesn't mess the cap up to push it down? I never heard of pushing it down.

CAUTION : On a HOT day if you fill it up too much and let it sit FULL the fuel will actually percolate out your fuel cap - and if motor is HOT - look out !

I saw it happen at a bike rally this year - wasn't pretty ..

There have also been issues with the gas caps on the newer bikes not venting properly and it will cause this. Its covered under warranty so they will just replace your gas cap. Mine wasn't just trickling it was pouring when mine did it though

If you look at your gas cap you will see there is a rubber gasket above the threads.

This gasket will drop down a bit and cause a false 'click' making you think it is tight when really it is maybe a 1/4" away from being tight.

The 'push it down' method mentioned above is trying to address this false 'click' without knowing what is causing it in the first place.

Just flip the cap upside down, take a look at the gasket and push the gasket 'up' towards the chrome cap and you will be good to go with no leaking from around the cap no matter how full you fill the tank.
