Windshield help
I wanted to get a windshield for the SG. I'm looking at HD's detachable but also like Memphis and National. It seems with both these companies the mounting hardware stays on the forks when you remove the windshield.
Any other companies that have truly quick detach (including the mounts), other then HD ?

i have the HD detach clamp setup on my 07 fxd. in a year it cracked. harley said that was too bad, no warrenty and i could get a replacement for about 90 bucks. instead i got the replacement from memphis shades. it fit perfect on my harley hardware and its twice the quality of the HD and has a lifetime warrenty. i would definately buy Memphis shades items. too bad they dont have the clamps like harley, they are really nice but their windshields suck.
good luck..

I recently bought the Harley-Davidson low profile quick detach windshield for my fat bob.
It looks nice on the bike but the buffeting I was getting on the helmet was so bad I couldn't ride (I'm about 6.2). I had double vision from wind blast and head shaking.
I found the turbulence was coming from below the windshield so it was going to be just the same with a taller one.
Brought it back the next day.
If you have the chance I suggest you to try and ride with the windshield before purchasing.

I have the HD standard sized windshield and have always gotten some buffeting,
but not a huge amount. Helmet types and seating positions seem to have a lot
to do with that. On my Sportster, I noticed a lot of air coming up from below. It's
still there but I notice less with the Dyna; most of it seems to be coming from the
handle bar area as I can get a noticeable difference in air flow when I move my arm
off the bar. My arms are acting as a sort of air deflector.
I just added a set of Memphis Shades lowers and they may be making a difference
for air coming up from below. I've only had time for one ride with them installed,
primarily a 15 mile interstate run which was really not a good test as there was little
traffic and no crosswinds to stir up turbulence. Things seemed noticeably smoother,
but I'll need a few more rides to be sure.
One note about the lowers; if you have a front fork brace or plan to install one,
the Memphis Shades lowers will not clear it. A very easy reshaping of the lower,
inner corner is required to add a bit of clearance.

Don't get too far from the dealer when you put on the HD detachable (if you get it.) I made three trips to my dealer after buying it:
1st trip-One of the mounting bolts wasn't properly machined, instead of alan head it was a smooth hole.
2nd trip- The internal linkage on one of the clamps snapped (poor casting), needed new clamp. Parts assured me this was unusual and rarely happens.
3rd trip- A different clamp broke, same spot.
After replacing the bolt and two clamps it works great. The dealer was great about replacing the bad parts...but I was getting a bit annoyed at the whole affair.

If you're looking for something a little unconventional, check out the National Cycle wind deflectors. If you look at the picture album in my profile, you can see how it looks on my FXDC. It's not sexy, but it is functional. It breaks the wind against the chest and keeps most of the road crap off me.
it stays on the bike all the time as will the deflectors.
