Default Battery Question

Hey Guys, I have the original battery in my 07 FXDC. It been having trouble starting "like no juice to turn the motor over". I bought a trickle charger and put that on there and it shows charged; I am getting a little over 12 volts on the MM. Can the battery just be bad? Time for a new one?

Thanks

The battery in my new 2007 SuperGlide only lasted me about 18 months! It started doing the same thing your bike is doing, and my dealer said he heard that the '07's got some bad batteries, and this was a common problem with them. He replaced mine and I've had no further problems. Don't know if he was BS'ing me to try and sell me a battery, but he's a good guy, and I don't think he'd do that for a measly $100.

It's hit or miss. I bought my 2007 FXDC in April 2007 and it works just fine some 2 years and 8 months later (19,500 miles). I use a Deltran Battery tender in the winter between rides.

gotta get it load tested. That is how you usually can tell if it is bad. Batteries should give about 2 years or so, some get lucky and get an extra year or two.

I had to replace the one in my 07 Street Bob in November of 2008 which sucked. Hopefully this new one will last longer.
One of the guys I ride with and who is a member on here has a 2000 Wideglide and he told me yesterday that it still has the original battery in it which shocked me.

Have a 07 FXDWG that the battery went bad on due to a loose neg. connection [ the dealer said] Bull it wasn't. cost me $100. Check and clean the NEG. side real good, charge and check again.

I still have my original in my '06. It would'nt start today but that's because of the 20/50 oil thickness and it being so damn cold out there. Was low 30's. I think the EFI flooded it too. Battery had good juice. Kinda surprised but glad it was too cold to start because if it did I woulda been pretty miserable out there me thinks. Gonna hook the tender up for a coupla days. It's gotta warm up soon...

Yea my negative cable kept coming loose and I didn't discover it until it had melted the negative post pretty good. I ended up loctiting it and it stayed on but the battery finally went **** up. I don't know if the melted post thing due to the negative cable coming loose shortened it's life but I sure as hell loctited the negative cable on the new battery as soon as I put it in.

Mine wouldn't start a couple weeks ago and i thought it was because of a low battery but it was because of the thick 20w50 oil and the cold. As soon as it warmed up a little a week or so later it started right up.

Batteries don't like getting stored. After 30 days without use, they start self damage. Two years is not uncommon (happened to me before).

However, if you leave a tender on it during storage, you can double the life and sometimes even triple the life of the battery.

I kept hearing how these newer Gel batteries were supposed to be so much better. I'm disappointed from what I am reading in this thread. I would have hoped for an improvement over the older "two year" batteries.
Darn shame.

i have an 07 fxd. bought it in sept of 06. if you stop and think....that battery was probably made in the summer of 06 at best. my experience with batteries is that you are on borrowed time after 3yrs. i dont care what type of battery you have. i just changed my battery out and the old one was working fine. i cannot fathom the logic in pushing your luck with a battery. you might make it for 5 years, who knows. but if you are up touring the UP of michigan and your battery gives out you will play hell getting to someplace that happens to have a battery for an 07 harley. i buy my stuff when the dealers have their sales and my new battery cost 79 bucks plus tax. its not worth the grief. the same logic goes with tires. i ride with people that take pride in seeing how long a tire can last. my 07 has 30,000 miles on itl so i do ride it some. if i do get hung up along the road i dont want it to be because i tried to save a couple bucks on the end life of wear items. drink a couple less beers in the summer and ride with fresh batteries and good tires.

good riding..
