Default Getting a custom paint job

So, who's done this on their bike? Do you do this through Harley (a dealer), or elsewhere? I'm wondering about this because I will buy a bike in a few weeks and try to not cry that I won't be able to take it out on the road for several more months yet.... So, maybe I can get a custom paint job done as part of the cost (build it into the loan).... I love the blue and want to keep that, but would like to get some flames on it.

How does this work?

By the way, I am so loving this group

Just look around your area for someone that does custom paint. Its going to take a lil research on your part, but I'm sure you'll get a few recommendations from folks in your area. Just make sure you are confident with whom ever you choose. Nothing like getting something you paid for and not getting what you want.

You can go thru Harley, but I feel they have a limited choice.

Harley sells paint sets, and a lot of them have flames, but they won't exactly be custom. They will also be just as expensive as a custom professional paint job that will look a lot better! Most areas will have some custom painters that can give you a nice paint job. Airbrushing and pinstriping is usually easy to find, you can even find some advertising on craigslist sometimes. I would avoid the dealership personally, but the most important thing is to find someone you trust and see some of their previous work to make sure it's up to par.

Ask around to friends that have had their scoots painted, get numbers and call around. Once again, cleavage will likely help!!

If you have any riding buddies, ask them who is reputable in your area. There are some folks who can shoot paint, and there's some that are professionals. You want a professional. Hope that helps.

I'm not sure if your referring to your Sportster about a paint job if you are your going to want a big twin sooner or later like most Sportster owners do so don't put any money into the bike if you don't have to , save it for the big twin , been there done that ! What are you buying ?

Do the obvious first - ask your H-D dealer for recommendations. Validate whatever they say by asking around among other riders. The local dealership here has some business cards from a local guy who is very good on their service counter.

Also, do a ton of research by looking at pics of bikes that have paint similar to what you think you want. The gallery here, google, etc. If I buy the bike I'm going to look at tomorrow I'll try to take and post some pics. It's an 07 Street Bob in blue with sorta tribal flames.

PS - what's your Ph.D. in, doc?

I don't remember her saying she was buying a Sportster. And if she is why not paint it the way she wants. Don't get that comment
