Question Back on a Dyna in '10?

Hello, I'm new on the forum. Had a '99 FXDX, and a '05 FXDLI. Both were stage 1; SE intake kits on both, V&H Straight Shots on the FXDX, V&H double barrel 2-1-2 and Power Commander on the FXDLI. I was pleased with the performance of both. I sold the FXDLI in 2007, have really missed riding, would like to get another Dyna. A neighbor is selling a '04 FXDLI, very good condition, with 4k miles, good price. But I am thinking I would like a late model, with EFI/96" motor/6 speed trans better than a carb '04. Other than price, any opinions on a low mile '04 88 with carb vs. '96 with EFI? I have heard the late models have had issues with running too lean, and hot. Will Stage 1 upgrades, performance exhaust, and a Power Commander on an '09 or '10 make for a good running machine, with performance comparable or better than my '05 FXSDLI? Are the H-D SE slip-ons good performers, or do I need after market performance exhaust? Comments and suggestions would be appreciated!

In 06, the 6 speed tranny and 49 mm forks came out, in 07 the 96". I am very happy with my 07, with SE pipes and S&S AC. With the HD download, I have had no issues at all. Heat issues are dealt with through rear cylinder shut off, automatic with download. Bike runs lean, but not a problem, performance is very good. I expect the 09 or 10 will run noticeably better than your old 99 or 05 did. EFI is a big improvement over carb, in my view. Handling is as good as it gets with a HD bigger forks make a difference.

Welcome to the forums! There are a ton of improved features on the later dynas than the earlier ones. New frames, bigger motors, beefier front ends, 6 speed tranny, wider rear tires, efi. But there's nothing wrong with a carb'd older bike either, especially if the price is right. The newer ones do come running lean & hot right from the factory to help meet epa regulations. But that problem can be fixed with doing a stage 1 with a efi tuner such as a sert, pc5, etc. If you look around good enough, there are some awesome deals out there on late model used bikes.

If the price is good , I'd go for the '04 . IMO , the 96" isn't much better , if at all than the 88" , and I have had both . The FI is a lot more expensive to alter than is a carb , but it is very nice to have , especially when the motor is cold . The six speed is okay , but again...if the '04 is priced right , I'd ride it just as easily as a newer one with the 6spd. Good luck...

How much do you want to spend? What do you really want? I decided last winter that I wanted the 96 with 6 speed. So that is what I got.

Negotiating now with the big boss on spend level. I bought the 99 FXDX and 05 FXDLI new, but things are different after our 401k crashed. Not nearly so willing to spend money. Neighbor wants $9500 firm for the '04 FXDL with SE intake and prof rejet, but it has sideshot pipes (very loud) and buckhorn handlebar that I would replace. Local dealer has a '07 FXD, stock, 8k miles, for $9k, but would likely take less now. Not as pretty as a FXDLI, and it would need stage 1 AC, Power Commander, and SE or V&H exhaust. Still, I'm leaning to the '07 to get the late model upgrades, EFI, 96 CI motor, and 6 speed.

$9500 for a '04 FXDL is not a good deal. You can get low mile 06 and later Dynas for less than $10000. The 07 FXD sounds like a better deal. Your neighbor will be lucky to get $7500 in todays market so good luck with his "firm" price.
