Default Gas Milage

Okay guys, one of the main buying points of a HD, now a days, is the gas milage. Only since it is close to $3.75 @ gallon here. I have been noticing that gas mileage on my Street Bob is not what was advertised, or anywhere near. I'm only getting around 40 mpg [:@]. Is it my riding style, I have been following manual 1st gear 10 - 20, 2nd gear 20 - 30 and so on..

This post reminds me of something I saw on TV recently:

Some 'expert' was saying that there is little or NO difference between the various octanes offered at service stations. Anyone out there NOT using the highest octane and having satisfactory results?.

I've always heard that running a higher octane fuel that the manufacturer recommends is a waste of money. I've never experimented, though. My Big Twin Evo with a mild (.5 lift) cam, K&N filter, and 2-1 Screamin Eagle exhaust gets about 43MPG on my daily commute.

40 is about what I get in the city. If I venture out into the country it gets up to about 42- 45. On the Interstate doin' 65- 70 in sixth gear I get between 50 - 54.

I've never used anything but the highest octane available. Usually about 91 - 93 octane. I was told that higher octane gas burns more effectively, and contains fewer impurities than the lower grades. But I'm no scientist, that's just what I was told.

The way I look at it, if regular is $3.85 and super is $3.95 and my tank is only 5 gallons, it's worth the extra $0.50. Even if all it does is make me feel like I'm bein' good to my scooter.

hmmm....then again I'm just about average while using 91. I have been told that the higer octane stuff burns better and reduces cylinder wear and such. Now if only I were a scientist......[&:]

I think I spend more money on gas for my bike than I do the car, only because when I'm on the bike I always take the long way.

ob- Don't know what type of mileage your bike has on it right now, but on mine and others posted here the mileage on your bike will go up after the motor has broke in roughly around 3500-4500 miles. I now average around 48-50 mpg on the highway. City more like 37-40, but I do a lot of short trips to work and back (3 miles one way).
