Default tight at 70

Got a question on my 2006 fxdi. At 65-70 mph it feels like it is running real tight. I've been able to cruise at 70. But a combination of tightness and vibration is disallowing higher speeds. I now have a little over 3000 miles on her. On the shovelheads it would have felt like a too tight primary chain. Maybe new engine still breaking in. Any comments appreciated.

dont know what that is, i got an 06 sgcustom and at 65-75 it runs like a sewing machine. What do mean by tight?? doesnt go when ya give it gas, or does it seem to sound like it is struggling when at those speeds??

The twin cam engine is new to me and the 06 has a self adjusting primary. I broke the bike in slowly and am fortunate enough to have mountain roads to ride on. I didn't have occassion to ride over 60 mph often until these last two weeks. I have throttle left at 70 mph, but either a vibration or the bike reving out makes me nervous to go much over 70mph. I am wondering if the self adjusting primary is self adjusting too tight, or do I need to keep blowing her out. I expect the twin cam will exhibit a tight engine. With good whether I should be needing 5000mile tune up soon and if this continues I'll drop this on the dealer.

When I got my first Sportster, it vibrated "so bad" that I thought something was wrong with it and was afraid to take it to speed. I had the dealer check it out and all was fine. I got over my apprehension from the vibration took her through the heavy vibes and all was fine. Your bike shouldn't vibrate like a solid mount Sporty, but it might just be that you're not used to it. If you really think there's a problem I'l either let a trusted friend who rides Harleys take it for a spin, or take it to your local shop for a once over.

What gear are you in at 70? I've ridden a lot of Dyna's and they all vibrate at idle but get pretty smooth at speed. On mu '06 Wide Glide 70 is just barely enough to keep the engine from doggin' in 6th gear. So maybe if you had it a little faster before hitting 6th it would be a little smoother.

I don't have a tach, but the engine sounds about the same at 45 in 4th and 75 in 6th.

If I go 65 in 6th it's vibrating almost like at idle, and I have to down shift for even a slight incline on a hill.

Don't know if that helps, but it's all I got for ya!

70-75 mph is the sweet spot on my '06 Dyna. I could ride all day at that speed. It's like sitting on the living room devan. I've had it up to 110mph with no probs.

I need to install a 6th gear in my '04....

80 mph is about 3700- 4000 rpm too rich for me.

You may be right. I am bringing the bike up to 6th gear around 55mph. It's evening and just got back from taking family to the lake. Tommorrow, tommorow, I'll follow your suggestion. Thanks

Thanks folks. By keeping my dyna in 5th gear past 60mph. I am able to easily cruise at 70-80.
