Default Foward Controls - 06 Bob

I bought the kit and would like to do the job myself.

So what am I getting into, how bad is it to take that primary cover off? Ill need some new gaskets and primary oil right?

Can anyone give me a run down of the job?

If you are set on doing this yourself...

Step 1. Buy a service manual.

Step 2. Follow guidance in said service manual.

I'm just messin with ya, well kinda. You might try doing a search on this subject. If I remember correctly there has been some advise given in the past.
Good Luck.

Did you buy the '06 kit? If so you will need to get or make a locking tool.

You can install them without taking the primary off. I put them on and wired the inside shifter arm to the engine so it wouldn't bang against anything. I will finish the job this winter when I can take my time and really do a good job and not screw anything up. (fingers crossed)

I just installed the 06 Forwards on my Street Bob last night withthout removing the primary, as so many other folks have done. The only issue I ran into was me being stupid (see my post today!) and breaking the head off a bolt. Otherwise, a clean and satisfactory job.

Whiff

He just left the shifter shaft in. The only way to remove the shaft without cutting it is to take the inner primary off.
I did mine and I am hardly a good mechanic. I got the service manual made a tool or two and took my time.
Took 4.5 hours total.

IMO HD makes parts just hard enough to install, that the majority of owners would rather pay than do it them self.
