ORIGINAL: czissman

I cant help you with retrieving the bloody thing, but I can tell you that the way I moved mine from hole to hole was to use a 3/8" drive extension with a universal joint on the end. Put a nice dab of grease (or double-back tape) on the end uf the universal joint, stick the blind nut to it and then slip it up over the tire and hold it in place while you attach the clip.

Good luck and welcome to the forum!
cziss, have a look at this:

sorry for not getting back to you guys sooner. i was able to get it out of there but it took a little time and an incredible amount of luck. you all had some excellent ideas. i wish i would have though of the double sided tape or pushing it out with hose water. once i took the belt guard off, i could see up inside there pretty well and had much better access. with the flashlight, i could see that it didn't roll over the front of the belt but over on the engine side, it was wedged in pretty good and it was far enough in that i couldn't even get a finger on it. i could get to it with a magnet but found, as many mentioned here, that the magnet won't pick it up. i was able to get in there with a claw grabber type thing just like what WgSkee described.

right now, i have the factory solo seat with the harley "detachable" passenger pillow. i'm going to get a C & C seat as my solo seat, when i do that i will just leave the harley solo and passenger pad permanently bolted together because anyone who has gone along as a passenger on my bike LOVES that pad. it doesn't look very good but if it will keep the ladies riding with me, i'll leave it anyway, i'm not real close to a dealership but the next time i'm there i'm going to get another one of those inserts. i'll leave the front one permanently attached and just remove the rear one when i have the solo seat installed.

in the mean-time, i found a bolt that fits the insert. i ground the head off and tied a string to it. before i remove the clip that holds the insert, i simply screw the bolt into it. when i remove the clip, i use the string to lower the insert and grab it. this also makes it MUCH easier to install the insert!

thanks for all your ideas, and to all of you who welcomed me to the forum. i belong to quite a few forums (some will read that as "too many hobbies") and this one is right up there with the best of them - friendly people, great advice, and TONS of info!

thanks again!

I was glued to my seat. [sm=popcorn.gif] I was glad to see it had a happy ending. [sm=groupwave.gif]
