I think there are two 30T sprockets available for these bikes, one for the crankshaft and primary chain, the other for the gearbox and rear belt drive. Either will have the same benefit of reducing gearing (a good thing IMHO!). Which is best?!

Do you need to replace the chain with this gear swap?

Yup...2 ways to go about it just as you said! I went the engine sprocket route with a 30T & comes with the correct length chain, seems to be a good set up with no issues & very easy install! Is it better than the secondary belt pulley...who knows? Both are great for the sh** gearing these days! Only reason I went with the engine sprocket & chain vs. the belt pulley is because changing the primary engine sprocket doesn't change what your speedo will read...not a big deal though!

I am also interested in this. I thought that the 30T engine sprocket (for an 07 FXD) was only available with NO compensator. Is this true?

Does anyone make a 30T with a compensator? Part #?

I just got done changing the trans pulley from the 32T down to 30T. For some reason I got it in my head that I should up-grade the compensator sprocket too.

First thing I noticed was when I went to start it - no more start-up "bang". It's a little later in the evening so I only got a chance to go for a test spin. I can tell you the bike just seems more "peppy". Yes, six gear was easier to reach on the ighway at approx. 65 mph but I think I will probably benefit in the 4th and 5th gear while riding to work in light traffic.

Got the parts from Chicago Harley (Andrews pulley, SE Compensator). Anyway, it was pretty straight forward with the service manual. I did have some setback when removing the starter - stripped one of the bolt heads. That became about an hour of - now what. I did manage to get it out.

One last thing - I did need to borrow an "impact wrench" - that tranny nut was on there but good.

Not sure what I'm going to do about the speed recalibration - I heard there are a couple after-market options.

Bottom line - I believe it's going to be well worth it.

6th gear from the factory is pretty high, I noticed this here a while back, I was running on I-44, I got to 6th gear..cruising along for a while thinking hey this is alright..looked down and i was doing slightly over 85mph, holy crap, I wonder how much flesh a guy looses by the time he slides to a stop from the speed? slowed down, then i was shifting down for every hill to 5th.
I may look into this change over, but its going to have to wait right now.
