Hi everyone. I don't have a security system on my bike and would like to have one... I have NO FREAKING idea what to look for, how to install them, if one system works with all bikes, etc. Thanks to anyone who can offer enlightenment here.
I don't know if I would agree with THAT advise...Granted, A security system doesn't always prevent your bike from being tampered with or stolen (they can still be disarmed, if a guy has the know how) .. but it is, to say the least, an attempt to discourage wouldbe vandals or thieves. Personally, I think, at least for the most part, a security system is a good idea. Having your bike stolen is not an experience you want to welcome. It's a bigazz pain in the keister and will increase your insurance premium quite a bit.
I can't tell you what would work on your specific bike, you'll have to do some research on that. What I can advise you on is .. Make sure your system will not only disable the bike, but will have an audio alarm. We made that mistake once ... ONCE! When hubby bought his last bike, he instructed our salesman to have the exact same security system as we have on one of his other bikes (disable and alarm) installed. We picked up the bike the day before we were leaving for a road trip .. and guess what? Yep, they installed a disabler but not audio alarm. Pfffttt! If you touched the bike the lights would flash! Big freek'n deal! What a scramble THAT was ... We were heading to Mexico, and didn't want to leave without a proper security system including an alarm.

I have the HD fob system on my 09 FLHTC without siren. Never really thought much about it either way until I got the 07 FXDB. Kinda miss the peace of mind I have with the 09, knowing that once I walk away with the fob in my pocket the bike isn't going to start. Can it still be lifted up and stolen? Sure, but that's mostly an overnight kind of concern for me, when I take road trips and the like. In those situations I carry a couple of cable locks and lock the frame of the bike to a telephone pole, another bike, or something similar.
I'm seriously considering adding the HD system to the Dyna although the $300 price tag seems steep. It is pretty much plug and play, however, which makes up for part of that. Oh, and you'll likely get a discount on your insurance as well.

Let us know what you decide!
Yep, there are certainly steps we can take to insure that we don't experience an unhappy ending to a great day of riding. Nothing worse than having someone mess with your bike or worse, have it dissappear.
You can lock your ignition, lock your steering, cable it to a stationary object, set your security system (to disable the engine if someone where able to get it started), AND and audio alarm (which would command attention if someone even tried to 'tinker' with it).
You can also get an audio alarm so sensitive that it will prevent anyone from even getting close to it. It will chirp and warn the subject to back off. They can't even get near enough to sit on it. Yes, there are a few steps to help prevent this...how and when to use any of these or any combination of these would be your call. You may only lock it up to go into a restaurant for coffee or you may want to use all methods if you are staying overnight in a strange location. That's the beauty of having all these options.
