I'm new here, hope you can help me.
I have a 2000 FXDX and I really like the 'all black' look.
What is the best way to paint bars, highway pegs etc? Scuff up and find wrinkle black paint? (I can't find it)
Is the wrinkle black finish actually a paint or is it powder coated at the factory?
I got this bike used and the guy before seemed to go back and forth between chrome & black.
I find it very diffcult to find parts that are NOT chrome.
Powder coating is an option...but i prefer to do things myself.
Powder coating is the best way to do it. You can buy kits at eastwood.com for a decent price. The only other thing you'll need is an old oven to back the parts in. You can get them used very cheap. Any other coating won't hold up as well.
The local NAPA carries wrinkle black paint. It sticks well if you gritblast the part first and clean it well with alcohol. The paint does take a little practice to use and get a consistent finish, but it matches the factory stuff pretty closely.
Dpepe,
I am with you on the wrinkle black look I have the 05 FXDX. I have found that if you contact the Stealer they can get a lot of the parts wrinkle black. The ones that they can't you can do yourself. I have asked this same question and gotten a lot of advice. Krylon wrinkle black paint and a hair dryer seems do be the easiest way anyone has told me about. Ruff the surface with find sandpaper, paint the part then take a hair dryer to it and watch it wrinkle. I would try it out on something other than your parts first that way you have an idea on what it is going to take.
You asked for other ideas for the FXDX. Mine does not have the black theme you are looking for but if I am able to post a couple of pictures you can see what I have done with black and chrome.
