I hear ya...love the FatBoy's 'cause i am one (lol), but will wait until my FXDC is paid off to buy another bike (unless i find a sweet deal on a workable Shovelhead). I already learned my lesson with trading in my Sportie (i should have listened to you all about not buying it in the first place) lol.

Never ridden a fatboy but I do like the looks of em, of course there isn't many harleys I don't like the looks of, on the same note though, gotta bud down in arizona that has an 05 custom sporster, and he's done a few things to it. Real clean bike, taken well care of, he was wanting to upgrade himself and either step up to a fatbob or maybe a fatboy, well he went to a couple dealers and they pretty much embaressed the hell out of him with a trade in value next to nothing. It's a shame, you all remember a number of years back that if you wanted to own a HD, you had to order one, and you might be on a list for over a year. Had that still been the case those values on our bikes might reflect more coin, but since Craigslist is full of gently used, and used up bikes, well the price flects those values unfortunately.....

Bought the way I feel, I mean they already sold this bike twice, once new and once to me when the other guy traded it in. Now they want to break one off in me and make more money out of it. I replied to his email that they had an 05 and 06 listed for 2400 more than my trade quote on an 08 with less miles and more extras. He didn't even bother to reply.

I'm going pay it off and use the money to do some custom work on the dyna. Maybe next year I will re-think it.

Now if i can find a job i can get a loan for a used Viper !

yeah, in todays market it would be crazy to trade a perfectly good bike for a new one... if the prices of new were slashed as bad as used bike prices... that would be a different story. the used market worth will go back up, once the bikes available level out and not everyone in financial trouble are trying to sell fast for anything they can get... wait a couple years...

Yep, sounds like a win/win for the dealer. He buys(steals) your bike, sells you a new one and then sells your trade at top dollar. I went to get a few parts this morning at the dealer and they have an 09 Heritage/ tuquoise and antique white, I like these colors but I'm not ready to get rid of my Dyna, and can't seem to hit on the lottery.

I don't think the Kelly Blue Book online shows 'trade in' vice 'private sale' or retail for bikes like they do for cages ... but that should give you an idea of what the differential or dealer mark-up (profit) is ... or at least what they're trying to make on the trade-in ....

However, if you sell through a private sale (or craigslist) you don't give the dealer the mark-up profit ... you don't have to take the low-ball offer ...

If you list on craigslist or wherever, you can entertain a "best offer" from a buyer, but you can also hold out for what you're asking ... or what the market will bear ....

Then you can go to the dealer with cash in hand and make them a low-ball offer ... or find a low-mile late model bike on craigslist that someone else is selling ... cut the dealer out of your scenario altogether ....

That gets you the bike you want without taking a huge financial penalty ... I know it is convenient to be able to ride in, get financing and ride out on the bike on their showroom ... but, they have direct costs and overhead they have to cover ... so, you are not getting a 'deal' that way ....

I'm looking (casually) at used bikes. I know what they are selling for on cycletrader, ebay, and craigslist, and I know that the dealers must be offering substantially less than the prices private sellers are listing. So, without telling us what you paid for the bike, what did they offer for your FXDC? Obviously if you don't want to say, I respect that, but it would give some of us who are looking some leverage. If I had to guess there's at least some collusion between dealerships on what they are offering on used bikes nowadays. Thanks.
