Default Another signal relocation thread

So I wanted to mount some Tourmaster bags on my WG but they were a little too large to fit comfortably between the shocks and sigs and the smaller bags were a bit too small to fit anything in comfortably so I was faced with the dreaded “Turn Signal Relocation Dilemma”. But since the older WGs (mine's an '05) have long struts with signals mounted several inches from the end, it appeared to be a relatively easy mod to move them to the rear of the strut. The ’06 and later WGs are already set up something like this. While I imagine this modification has been done plenty of times I thought I’d show what I came up with and the result. Sorry in advance for the poor picture quality.

Step 1) Remove 5/16” signal mounting bolt

Step 2) Remove wires from connector and remove signal assembly

Step 3) Drill 3/8” (a little under) hole 1” forward of rear fender mounting bolt. This hole feeds the wires and also indexes the signal stem for correct positioning.

Step 4) Enter the house and gorge on crab cioppino and a couple glasses of pinot grigio. (Don’t leave this step out)

Step 5) Throw everthing back together again in the new positions. The 5/16” signal mounting bolt fits snugly through the 3/8” nut-sert in the taillight mounting bracket. This nut-sert originally accepted a 3/8” button-head mounting bolt. The original signal mounting hole is already 3/8” so that same bolt fits there, being secured with a nut this time. Since the signal wires come from the taillight assembly, they don't need to be extended. The only alteration made is the single hole in the strut.

I prefer a French 2003 Medoc
To cover the holes you could use H-D chrome hole plug (p/n 56239-93) (see pic) retails for $1.00 each at LSHD1.com (H-D price $1.25).

Nice job - neat solution to a problem. Are those bags some kind of gortex (textile) material? I've been looking for something like that but not found anything like them here in the UK - bit more pactical than leather I would think. Where did you get them?

Good work, I'm looking for somewhere to move mine to. I had them snugged right up to the fender, but now I'm adding docking hardware, and I don't like how far they stick out with the relocation hardware.

If you ever need to move them back a little farther back. They can be mounted on the plastic that holds the tail light and license plate. for added strength I added a fender washer on the under side.

That's a great idea-and they look good.

They're some type of heavy cordura. Google in Tourmaster and look under Tourmaster-not Cortech- luggage, Cruiser III.

I ended up doing the same exact mod, for a different reason. I bought my bike used, with the bags and the turn signals relocated with a relocation kit which used a single, hollow mounting post and some blanks to fill in the cutout in the turn signals.

I found some stock style turn signal mounts with the LED's in the stalk on a clearance table. It said they would fit my bike, but my bike wasn't there at the time, so I really had no idea.

When I go home, I figured out I'd need to do exactly as described here, drill another hole. I also needed to run to the hardware store and get a longer bolt. Worked well, looks good.
