Simple. If you take the cover off with the bike on the jiffy stand you may loose a little oil. Have someone hold the bike up or put a small block under the jiffy stand. I have heard horror stories about the torx screws stripping out trying to loosen the cover screws. I used an impact driver, no problems whatsoever. You will probably want to replace the gasket also.
Like the others said just but a small block under the jiffy stand to keep from losing any oil.
Then take a Torx bit and gently hit it with a hammer on each bolt to break up the lock tite. This will help prevent stripping any of them out. Then put your new on.
The stock cover takes a rubber gasket were most others use the pancake style so pick up a new gasket as well.
On a new bike you shouldn't have any issues with the Torx IF you use the correct size. My 07 FXDB and 09 FLHTC and the s/o's 2000 FXDL are all T-27 so I'm betting your's is as well. Many people mistakenly use a T-25 because it's more likely to come in the set they have.
Even so, I'd replace them with hex head screws so you don't have any future issues. We're currently struggling to pull the broken torx stud from my s/o's timer cover. Totally stripped (rusted from years near the ocean) and ended up drilling off the screw head to get the cover off. But that's a much smaller screw (8-32 vs the 1/4"-20 in the derby).
You can re-use the orange rubber gasket about 3 times. Torque the screws back in using a start pattern at 100 INCH lbs. I am on my 2nd gasket since 2006. If you take your torx screw to a True Value hardware you can get SS #20 coarse thread allen headed cap screws the same length for about $2 and never have to deal with the stupid t-27 BS.
