Thanks for all the information. I wanted to change the oil in my bike before riding season. I bought my (used) bike 2 months ago and have no idea when the last oil change was, but the bike has less than 2000 miles, so time is more of an issue than miles.

Well, despite the pissing contest going on here between these two petroleum engineers......it's great to see a new guy getting some help without being referred to the stinkin' search engine...
BTW...I do know enough not to put vaseline (petroleum based) on my condom (rubber based) ...

This is a little off topic, but it supports someone's claim on here about motor mounts. For those of you that have or had hot water boiler systems, the old 3-piece circulators had to have their motors oiled periodically. These motors have rubber motor mounts. When people over-oiled the motors, the oil would run down the motor and wreck the motor mounts, causing the motor to sag and breaking the coupler. I agree there are different types of rubber, some designed to work with oil, some not so much.

Just saying...
