I will visiting the US of A in May of this year to do a roadtrip with a few of my riding mates.
We will be arriving in Los Angeles then going onto Las Vegas to pick-up our rental bikes. I have reserved a 2010 Street Glide, my riding mates are going for the Electra Glide Classic bikes.
My question, we want to buy jackets, boots and helmets before commencing the `Wild at Heart' tour of the US, where will we get the best deal Los Angeles or Las Vegas? Also, is there State or Federal sales tax on these items?
Any recommendations/guidance will be greatly appreciated.
Cheers

There will be state sales tax, no matter which state you are in, and if you have your heart set on clothes from the MoCo, it won't matter where you buy them... they'll be about the same price for any dealer you buy them from.
If I rememeber correctly, Marina Del Rey Harley has a showroom pretty close to LAX. Also a big HD dealer on the strip in Vegas. I know Nevada doesnt have an income tax, but cant remember if they have a sales tax (Delaware doesnt).
Coming from Singapore, buying stuff in the US is a lot cheaper than buying in Aus (or SG) so load up and take along another bag. One of my buddies bought up a load of crap and sold it on a local Ebay and almost paid for his trip. He's from NZ. But would take your own helmet in case you dont find what you like.
I'd suggest you going to OR state.
I used to live in seattle but I used to go to portland,OR to buy all my HD and any expensive electronics.
OR state is tax free haven like DE

+1 I live in Oregon and we have no sales tax. Latus H-D in Gladstone, a suburb of Portland has one of the largest selections of gear. They have a large website, you might want to check them out. http://www.latus-harley-davidson.com/. They have free shipping on orders over $149 you could purchase from them and have it shipped free via UPS to your hotel in Las Vegas. Just a thought.
I rode that area this fall. I was lucky enough to get my bike shipped out there and back for free. I flew into Las Vegas, got on my bike and rode through Death Valley, up to Yosemite National Park, over to San Francisco, down the coast and ended up in Hollywood. It was awesome. Trip of a lifetime for a Midwest dude like me. PM me if you want more info on my trip. I have my route mapped out on google maps. If there are any places I went that you’re also going to visit I can recommend places to stay or eat.
A friend of mine as also made this trip several times. Same start point (Las Vegas) and destination (Hollywood), but a different route each time. Have fun!!!

I wouldn't mind some more info on your trip - a buddy of mine is visiting from Adelaide (Australia) in early March and we're looking to do the same trip as you, but in reverse - heading up the coast via PCH to SanFran, then Yosemite, DV and LV
speedybrother - I live not far from LAX - if there's anything I can help with while your in LA, let me know.
Los Angeles has a 9.75% sales tax while LV has 8.1% - $16 difference on $1000 purchases. Not enough to move me one way or the other. I'd look at other factors - how are you getting from LA to LV? If rental car, who cares? If flight, I'd buy in LV to save the hassle of hauling the stuff on the plane, and probably paying an extra luggage charge. Airlines have gotten downright nasty about that here.
