I would like to put on forward controls.

Did you use harley or an aftermarket?

and did you install yourself? How hard is it?

any advice would be great, thanks

I used Harley parts and had them put on when i got the bike. I had to order my bike so it was just as easy to roll it into the cost of the bike.

I've installed both Kuryakyn and H-D and neither will pose a problem for a beginning mechanic. Either set can be installed in roughly 30 mins using a basic set of hand tools.

Used HD parts. The shift lever had a weld break on me. I welded it up.....but kind of disappointing...they were only a few weeks old with 100 miles on them.

They go on SUPER easy.

I used HD. It was pretty easy especially if you have a service manual. It was the first time I did it as well.

Default FWD Controls

I put the Kurys on mine, 35 minutes max. I don't know how tall you are, but make sure you get the extended Fwds if your inseam is 33" or more. I also machined peg "extentions" from the old HD highway pegs to give me more room to stretch, especially on the A/C side.

Harley wants to charge $300 plus to put them on.

I am prett much a rookie, but I will get a couple of friends and see if I can do this myself.

Still don't know if I should go harley or K...

Did any of you leave the mid footpegs or do those go

They charge that due to taking off the primary (inner and outter).

You don't need to do that. Either leave in the shaft or cut it out.

I went with harley parts on mine because I wanted the willie G theme. I had the dealership put them on mine, but then I worked with a friend to install them on his he used harley parts on his. The hardest thing was getting the rod that goes through the primary out. Some people say to jam it against the engine case and put the button cover that comes with the forward control kit over it, but when we tried that with my friend's it didn't fit the rod didn't go that far through the primary case. So we ended up using a hack saw and sawing through it. You have to saw through the rod between the engine case and the back of the primary. The rest just bolts up according to the instructions that come with them. Real easy.
