Your need is only based on if you upgraded your exhaust and your air cleaner. If all you ever plan to do is change the exhaust and air cleaner to a stage 1 (maybe at time of purchase) the dealer ay have done a stage 1 download for you which is a one time thing but if you get into engine work such as larger displacement, cams, etc that one time download won't cut it. That is where the power commander or similar device will step in.

The power commander controls how much fuel and air get thrown into the engine.

If you never plan to upgrade your bike and keep it bone stock, no you don't need an aftermarket fuel management such as the power commander. There are several other brands out there. Power commander is just one of them.

Did you replace the a/c? I've got V&H Big Radius and SE Heavy Breather, and unfortunately bought the download for $150. I rode it like that for a year and couldn't figure out what the bid deal was about the new pipes a/c... until I installed the Power Commander V on my bike last week. Can't speak for anyone else's results, but it truly woke up the beast. Lot's more power, and sounds a hell of a lot better. However, if you're happy with the way your bike sounds and feels, maybe it's not for you.

Happy ridin'

Boosh... you mention "stage 1". Stage 1 what? air cleaner or download.

Chances are if the pipes and (possibly) stage 1 air cleaner were dealer installed then they did the stage 1 download also.

You need to know what they did before a suggestion can be made, but as David said "if you're happy with how your bike rides then you probably don't need it". I think this is more the case as the only thing you've mentioned is that all your friends (5) have a power commander and they have told you that you need one. You haven't mentioned anything regarding how your bike rides or whether you're happy with it at this point.

You also haven't mentioned if you're planning on more engine mods such as cams or a big bore kit which would also affect the suggestion for or against the need for a power commander or similar device.

ok here goes.

your bike rolls off the factory line tuned to run lean, due to EPA restrictions.

any change you make in either the intake (air intake unit) or the exhaust (pipes) is going to cause the bike to lean out even further, causing harm to your motor.

when you change both the intake and the exhaust, you should install some sort of fuel management system (like a power commander, TTS autotune, vance and hines fuelpak, screamin eagle race tuner, etc) in order to regulate the air/fuel ratio that your bike is running on and to increase your fuel mileage and to ensure that the components you put on your bike are working in conjunction.

when you install your fuel management, you can either run a "map" which basically means inputting your particular components into the bike's computer and calibrating it accordingly, or have the bike dyno tuned, in which case a tech will fine tune your motor to run optimally.

if the air cleaner and the pipes were changed, you should put a fuel management system on the bike to keep the engine happy.

With respect to you Toast, the OP is in Greece. Are HDI bikes subject to our EPA regulations?

But generally, when you do pipes and a/c at the dealer they will install the stage 1 download if you allow them to or install a 3rd party fuel management.

no idea, but wouldn't the same principles apply?

intaking more and exhausting more without regulating the air/fuel mix is going to lean the motor out regardless of how it comes from the factory, no?

btw, i thought the OP was from california and the location he had listed was some sort of joke/nickname

True, changes in intake or exhaust would dictate some sort of fuel management.

I just wonder if HDI bikes are sent out per EPA regs.

Oh, and I only know Kefalonia is greece because I googled.
