Default First real mod!!

Feeling like a kid with a new toy. Just picked up my 16" apes! Taking them straight home to work out riser heights, cables and wires... Okay, so I guess its not a mod yet, but surely in the works. I had the bike and myself measured at my local Stealer. Figured I have about 22" from the top of the trees to play with before going over the shoulder. I'm pretty sure I'll go with a 1-2" riser but I plan to mock on the stock just to see and get a feel for it.

Ok, I started by mocking on the stock risers, as I suspected, way too tall, so we just happened to have a set of 3" with 1" pull back. Didn't like the look and brought the bars too close. So tomorrow morning I'm off to the swap meet to look for 1.5" or 1" risers. The bike looks sick with the apes. I took pics, but don't know how to upload from the phone.

Went to the swap first thing this morning. I hunted all day for the risers I mentioned above. I found 2 different sets, both pretty rough lookin. I did find a smooth chrome riser cap for $10 so i grabbed it. As I was fixin to give up I took a second look at a vendor I'd seen earlier. I couldn't believe what i saw. I had found a set of 3/4" offset risers, brand new. I stole em for $40 and headed straight home. I mounted the risers and decided I like them with the offset forward (I'm prepared for all the "backwards" comments). I've got the bars mounted now. and adjusted to my liking. However, Im having a problem finding where my wiring disconnects to pull thru the stock bars. Can anyone help me out? I'm a little hesitant to just start pulling off parts and would like some direction or input. I took a few quick snaps to post but having a heck of a time with photobucket. These bars look just the way I imagined! Fist to the wind! Can't wait to get it finished up.

I'm still needing advice, help, tips or info on getting the wiring disconnected and pulled thru the old bars. Are the connectors under the tank? Surely you don't just cut them... This is my first real attempt at wrenching on a bike, don't wanna make any mistakes. I know somebody out there can give me some pointers. Thanks guys!

the wiring harness runs through the backbone. if you look on the left side in front just in front of the tank you will see where they come out. on the older bikes there was a wire tie that kind of held all the wires in. you can pull the wires out from the back bone. do a search about pulling the pins out of the plug (mud did a great one). then on the back fender there is a hole covered by a plastic piece (look between the tire and the fender). that is where you will find the service loop. you may want to look and see how it is routed before pulling the harness from the backbone.
this is all based on a 2001 fxdxt so things may be different on your bike but it might be a good start. good luck
