Default 2008 wide glide, seat problem

I have a 2008 wide glide. Qestion, there is a seat strap that is connected with a nut under the seat. Is this strap needed? Does it hold the seat stable? Unless I am doing it wrong it is about impossible to undo the strap and rebolt it under the seat. Would like to do away with it but am a little hesitant. Thanks for your replys. Tom c.
P.S. if anyone could enlighten me as to the proper way to remove and reinstall same, thanks again.

You can safely do away with the strap.
It's only purpose was for a "grab handle" for any passenger.

Most people leave it off, after taking the seat off the first time.

Take off the rear screw holding on the 2-up seat and pull it back as far as you can and turn on about a 45 degree angle to the bike and it'll slide out easily from the strap. I asked the same question and got help from these forums and I am happy to help somebody with the same problem. I bought a Lepera Solo and it really changed the look of the bike, and when I put the other seat back on it definitely won't have the strap.
