Default Forward Controls on 2008 SB

Okay, I am getting mixed info from the Harley shop and others. I am trying to figure out what I need to do to add forward controls. Harley says I have to take off inner and outer primary cover. I assume to get the stock shift peg mount shaft out. Couldn't I leave the shaft in there and put a "beauty" cap on it and turn it so the linkage sticking up behind the primary wouldn't show? Hope that makes sense.
Then I would be able to the work myselfe in my garage.

2008 Street Bob, and either Harley or Drag Specialties Forward Controls is what I am after.

Thanks all.

Yes, you can leave the shaft in place. You can also cut the shaft off. Both you can do without taking the covers off. I'll have to say it wasn't that easy to cut the shaft off. In hindsight, I might have just taken the covers off if I was doing it again.

If you think you may ever want to go back to mids. Leave the shaft in and get a Kury cover (part 9072) for it. Should put some sort of bracket on the arm to keep it from moving around to.

On my 05 Dyna 88ci I put harley forwards on and the kit came with a cap and clip that held shift point (linkage) in primary something changed in 06 with the kits not sure what,
you should be able to get a cover like stated earlier and secure shift point through primary?

Actually, you don't need a bracket. I just attached it to the shifter bar with a zip tie.

I suppose it's "cleaner" to open it all up and remove it but that adds time...and I like using time to ride.

The forward kit comes with a cap and a bracket to secure the mid linkage to the primary (if I remember right). I used a '05 and older kit because a buddy had one, and the only thing that didn't work was that the shifter linkage was too short.

what do you do about the hole in the inner primary cover when you cut the shaft out? I know you could buy another inspection cover for the outer primary, but....

I bought a hole plug at the hardware store since I built up my forwards to use wrinkle black mounts like the Fat Bob has. Others have said the Harley kits come with plugs.

Have a look at the Kuryakyn kit..... I think it is designed to not require removal of the inner primary
