Sounds like size envy to me. My FXD was barebones when I bought it, just the way I wanted it. Didn't need to spend another few thousand for the bling that I would only have removed anyway. Ride what you want because you want to. When we get too involved with trying to measure up or ride what someone else thinks looks like a "classic Harley", then it's no longer your ride.
What is "classic" anyway? Look at some of the gems HD had out in the 60's and 70's, small Italian cycles with a HD logo on them! Classic, Harley also made golf carts for years, I guess they're considered "classic" also. My point is that at times, we all take what others say way too serioiusly. The only person you need to keep happy is yourself (and the wife, okay that's 2 people).
The Dynas evolved from early riders, outlaws in particular, changing the front end of dressers to a narrow tire, and stripping the bike down to barebones. They were known as choppers because everything had been chopped off of them. They did this so the bikes would be faster and handle better.
I think it was in the 70's sometime that Willie G. designed the Superglide in response to what people were already doing with the dressers, and a new breed of HD was born that has become just as classic as the old dressers.
Tell the people that are giving you crap about the Dynas being too small to go tell Sonny Barger and all the other outlaws that started this trend that their bikes are too small.
My wife rode a 1997 Lowrider all across this country, and probably his more miles on her rainsuit than most of the people giving you crap have riding total. She now has a Heritage that she loves, but she still misses the quickness and handling of the Lowrider.
Ride what you like, and to hell with what people think. Just challenge any one of the Heritage or Fatboy riders to do the canyons with you. See who's draggin' the pegs first.
Seems to me that I heard somewhere that the FXD was the bike of choice of the Hells Angels. I would not want to walk up to an HA and say, "how do you like your Girly Bike?"
This is funny to me. I rode a Sportster 1200 Custom for a while. While following all of the XL forums, I noticed a lot of âjustificationâ for riding them because big twin riders call them girl bikes. Now Dynas are in question? WTF! How big does a bike have to be to be a manâs bike? After me and my wife went to Laughlin, we decided that if we were going to do road trips, it would be better to have a bigger bike. I went to the dealer to look at a wide glide. When I saw the Road King Classic, I fell in love with the classic look and then the price. It cost the same as the wide glide and it already had saddlebags and a detachable windshield. Thatâs why I bought it. I rode my dadâs wide glide and love it too. The fact of the matter is the sporty was more of a handful than my Road King or the wide glide. It has a higher center of gravity, stiffer suspension, and way faster. The big bikes seem to float around where you have to ârideâ a Sportster. My opinion is that if a guy is criticizing your ride, it probably stems from something other than the size of the bike.
First, I really hate this "girls bike" stuff. It really pisses me off.
Whatever male says this is just intimidated by you, male or female, and is looking to increase his self image. Replace "girl" with "Black, Pollack, Gay, Newfie" and there would be a riot because of the stupid, ignorant comments that person is making.
Second, I like Dyna's for the simple reason that they have the TC88 engine, not a "B", which allows many more hop up options. If a serious modifier wants a light bike that can be stroked, bored, etc., etc., this is the bike. I like "B's" also, but they are for a different type of rider.
Third, I think that we should treat anyone on this forum that makes such a stupid comment like this again as a flame poster and ban them.
F what others think, especially ignorant F-ing people like that. What, they cant pick on sporties cause they are quiker , more nibble and not as easy to ride even though they are small, so now they have to talk **** about Dyna's? Thats so lame. Softails are cool, but are to big of a FAd and I dont want to be part of a fad that makes you ignorant( not all people with softtails are) I would never lower my head in shame when asked what I ride, I say proudly a SPORTSTER!!! Tell them there are more women riding softails now than other models( not that it maters to me, I respect any women that rides) but it will eat at them certain people as they think about it. I have a big enough memeber in my pants that I can ride what ever I want and be proud, and never embarassed!
If you have to justify it then your embarrassed or also think the same way. Be proud of your ride no matter what it is! Dont justify yourself to no one especially to yourself. Just ride and have fun!

Me too! I owned Wings, shadows, Yamaha's (still have one) Kawi's, Suk's, CanAm's and would love to own a BMW, Triumph, Duck and the list goes on. Love bikes, hate posers!
Lotsa good stuff in this thread. I'd bet the idjits who are saying the Dyna series is too small are fairly new riders, or at least johnny-come-latelies to the HD world. Good grief, the Dyna series evolved from the Super Glides. They were the thing to have in the '70s and early '80s before the Sloptail came out. Heck, they handle better than the Sloptails and Garbage Barges, and will blow 'em in the weeds to boot.
Next time one of these sidewalk commandos ventures his idiot opinions, tell him you'd much rather ride the descendant of the Super Glide than a garbage barge or a fake hardtail!
