no choice for the CV. I'll choose the CV...reason, dyno says 1hp gain for the most part with say adding a mikuni, and the cv runs great tuned correctly. Lot of money for 1hp gain. Bob Wood makes a killer CV carb too. If I did buy a new carb, I'd buy his.
Yup but most people won't want a Mik for the small extra HP - its all about throttle response.
The CV does a great job for what it is, however its best feature is also its downfall - the vacuum operated slider. No matter what you do with drilling out the slider or changing the spring there is always lag between hitting the throttle, the slider rising and the power coming on. With the Mik as soon as you touch the throttle the power is there. Its better from a standing start and it gives crisper response through the twisties too.

True but with the CV acceleration is smooth, with the Mik the feeling is that it is either on or off , most noticeable while going slow through a parking lot. I also find that the CV is altitude adjusting wont have to change jets climbing higher/lower elevations. I have flooded plugs with a Mik doing this. Both good carbs it just depends on want you want.
Guys.....follow along here. He had a CV and went mikuni. He doesn't want a CV. He's asking about Mikuni vs S&S. I myself like S&S Super E's. When my CV finally takes the final poop, I'm going S&S. I have had good luck with them when bought new. 30 year old worn out S&S Supers are not a good place for comparison.
I don't have any experience with the S&S but, I do have with the Mikuni 42. I couldn't believe the difference when I installed and tuned it. Throttle response is great and mileage is as good as it gets. I am getting between 46 and 50 mpg. Last big mileage trip was 750 miles in a day and I was getting 52 mpg on the freeway, riding 80 mph.
After the initial install, I set the carb and haven't messed with it since.

Have you ever run / owned a bike with a Mikuni ?
I did follow along. Said I had no experience with a S&S.
Nope, I have never run a mikuni on a Harley, only jap bikes. Had great luck with them. I have had great luck with S&S on Harleys. Both at the track and on the street.
