Traded my 79 Ironhead finally. For a 97 Lowrider with 9,960 miles. Took the Dyna out for the first long run today. She is a nice little power house.
First: Trying to shut off the fuel and run her till she quits, doesn't seem I can find the right position on the petcock. There is no "Off" position. There is "Reserve" on top, "Fuel" on the bottom and looks like --F forward. So, I put the blade forward and ran her for several minutes. No cut off. Does it take a long time for this one? My 79 Sportster would shut off in about two minutes, if that long.
Also, I find that the front brake lever will not travel all the way out when released, leaving the brake light on. It travels to pinch my fingers when braking and does feel soft. It will finally bite though. Ordinarily I would think this means air in the line but I have heard that the caliper pistons get fouled and might not travel on these bikes. Any advice here?
Thanks. I love the bike, and I can't believe I have had so many others but not an FXD before - much less an FXDL.
The 97 still had a carb. I tried it again with the blade forward and she quit her slow chug chug after 3 minutes. So it must be a big bowl -. The Ethanol in the gas these days will clog up a carb pretty fast if you leave it with the petcock on. Takes much longer to clog over time if you run it "dry" when you know you wont be running her for a while.
The dealership flushed the forward brake lines and solved that problem. They tell me you should not leave DOT 5 (silicon based) brake fluid for more than two years between replacements. It will absorb water from the air in that time. The water will corrode your internal parts and deteriorate braking performance.
Thats good info to know. I was under the impression that since the petcock was vacuum operated it wouldn't shut off when "closed". Since I was told that a while back I never tried to run my carb dry, but I will now.
