so I have been working on a 1986 fxr, this is my dads. it needed some much needed tlc on a budget, so I bought a manual. then I bought, plugs, some rubber hose, simple green, polish, paint ect. The problem with the bike was it ran like crap and sat in the garage for years untouched, when you clicked the signals they didnt flash figured a ground. so I start messing with it and 1 night when its raining I take it apart. polish, clean, put back together, well here is the problem's now.
1)turn the key on and starter starts running.
2)brake stays lit all the time
3)lr and rf signals stay lit all the time
4)rr and lf wont even light.
any ideas? I am growing tired of messing with this thing, and feel as tho I may be out of my realm. I am gonna buy some electrical cleaner and dielctric greece. and triple check all my plugs. but i have already checked them twice.
ps if I unplug the starter relay it stops but the lights still don't work. any help?
Not sure about the 86 but the turn signals on my 82 used a momentary contact switch - you have to hold the button in to make them flash. Let go of the button, they stop.
Since pulling the relay stops the starter, you may have found your issue. Get a new relay (cheap) and see what happens.
Start at the battery and disconnect, inspect, and clean each and every connection you possibly can. By clean I mean use emery paper and sand the terminals shiny. You have connections on the back of the ignition lock, ground wires, and all the obvious terminal points.
Also make certain the battery is good and fully charged - if its been sitting for years and you haven't replaced the battery its no good. Low voltage from the battery can cause all kinds of electrical gremlins.
I know most people hate electrical problems but if you take your time and work through all the connections and wires (checking for breaks and grounds) you'd be surprised how easy it can be.
ya it is a brand new interstate but, I pulled it and put it on a 1 amp charge until i get home tomorrow. I am thinking pulling the relay stoped it because it cut the power maybe, but I am gonna pic one up tomorrow. Ima tell you guys what, working on a 1 year old bike with all my upgrades make me feel like a super tech, until you tear into a 30 year old bike. that'll teach me.
sounds like you smashed some wires when you put the bike back together, they are either shorted together where they are smashed, or the harness got connected wrong, which would be very hard to do. look for the smashed wires, they are probably in the same bundle. This is a simple fix.
The brake light is probably the clutch perch on the handlebar being too far from the switch housing, allowing the switch plunger to move out and make contact. Loosen the perch and push it right up tight, locking in the notch, and tighten the perch screws.
Turn sigs. The ones light but don't flash because the other two are burned out or the wires are damaged or there is a bad ground. Take a bulb from one that works and put it on the other side, see if the two on one side will flash. If so, then buy two new bulbs for the other side.
The starter issue is probably a stuck pushbutton or the heavy cables on the solenoid are reversed.
Good luck.
