Question Problem with the Bob

Hi guys ,

Did you ever face this problem were the bike starts ok when its in neutral but its not starting when its in gear and clutch (it dies/ cut out).
On the other side when it starts with the neutral and you put first gear (when its in the sidestand) the engine dies .....
When the engine starts with the neutral and you put first gear WITHOUT having the sidestand then its fine ...

Any ideas ? - by the way I have a street bob 2008

Thanks
John

Sounds like it's a Safety Feature , i had a Jap bike that did that when the kickstand was down , but my 2006 SB does not

Umm, if I understand you correctly then that's how its supposed to work. Its a bit of idiot-proof technology to stop you trying to drive off with the sidestand down.

You should only be starting your bike in neutral. Basic safety taught by MSF.

The way I understand it, you're putting wear on your clutch plate while starting bike in gear. Not a gear head girl but am a truck driver with little clutch knowledge. It's also a safety feature on my bike.
I like my bike too much to start it that way. Any damage is just too much damage.

Guys ,

I think you did not understood - let me clarify , I start the engine in neutral but once I put first gear the engine dies !

That's the problem and for sure this is not a safety feature

Where are you from? Some international models do have a kickstand interlock feature. If you do have this feature it will not run with the kickstand down and in gear even if you hold the clutch in. Also on the odometer you will see a mesage that says "SidE StAnd".

If you are in the US then your clutch may not be engaging properly. It could need adjusting or is in need of repair.

Either way you shouldn't be putting it in gear with the kickstand down. And starting the bike in gear is not only hard on the clutch but is hard on the starter.

On a Harley dealer test day one bike had the same problem, even as you say with the side stand up . They sprayed the side stand pivot/ safety switch area and it cured the problem. I,d say its the switch causing the problem either dirt or water in the connection.

yep I am thinking the same probably its the safety switch - I will try taking it out and clean it with WD-40 . I will also lubricate the "switch" on the handle bar (inside the clutch) maybe also it helps.

From the day I start using the bike winter time all internal connections seem to need lubrication and cleaning ...

I'll let you know on the results
