Default Considering a 1996 Dyna

Which would be my first Harley but not my first bike. Been riding for 40 years. Local guy is selling a 1996 Dyna with 10K miles on it. Always garaged, etc.

Was hoping someone could guide me as to any issues that I should look for. Also how many different Dyna models did they make in 1996?

Would most of you have a mechanic take a look - even with only 10K on the clock?

Any info or issues specific to 1996 model would be appreciated!

Thanks,

Dave

For me it would really depend on how much he's asking for it. I just bought my '99 Dyna Wide Glide...in the process I looked at a couple of dozen bikes before I settled on mine. Some of these sellers have absolutely no idea what price they should put on their bike. And some of them seem content to sit on the bike forever instead of taking a lower offer. I always ask how they decided on their price.

I did 90% of my searching on craigslist. Amazing how things keep showing up on there.

I had a '93 Dyna Wide Glide (in 1993)...no particular issues with it, but it would have to be a real bargain for me to buy another Evo motor. I just like the improvements on the twin-cam motors. My last ride was a 2003 Electra Glide Classic, but I decided to go back to the '99 Dyna because I don't ride a lot of long distance and I like to do my own wrenching, and I don't do FI. And I got a great price with almost all the mods I would have done anyway.

Good luck...

Default older bike on a budget

It's nice to find one in great condition w/ such low mileage, but that's a pretty old bike; the engine's three generations old, now. Most of the rubber stuff will have deteriorated, for example, if it's original. It all comes down to price. If you have a very small budget, say $5,000, then you'll be looking @ 15-year old bikes. But for $10,000 you can find a nearly brand-new one. There have been many improvements to the Dyna since then. I bought the '09 for $9,000 because I wanted all the improvements. Remember, it is a buyer's market.

Most used-bike buyers would be well-served to have a pre-purchase inspection done by a qualified HD mechanic. Have this all setup beforehand to streamline the transaction; seller can meet buyer @ mechanic's shop. If anything significant is found buyer has a better negotiating position to receive a discount from price agreed upon. Money well-spent.

I would ask to have a mechanic check it over. WE just finished a job for a fellow that got a "great deal" on a low mileage 2004 Lowrider. He brought it to us complaining he thought the fuel filter was clogged. He was right - entire tank and all contents rusted from sitting in a garage for five years.
