howdy gang! I have a 2004 fxdli! It was brand new when I bought it this past Feb. It had 3 miles on it! Don't ask my why ? or how ? but I have it now! It runs really well after they did the 1000 mile service check! I put on some screamin II's on it and now have approx. 1000 miles on the mufflers! I get a few gurgglin sounds on decel and maybe a soft pop but that's it otherwise it sounds nice! Everything else is stock! My question is .... I'm looking at getting a windsheild. I ride with a couple of friends of mine who have baggers. They like to cruise at around 85 to 95 for some time! My bike has no problem at that speed ... steady as she goes The problem I have is the wind ... if I'm not really holding on to the handle bars ... I'm sure I'll get blown off the bike when the wind gusts come by. Will the windsheild help eliminate the gusts blowing on my chest and almost knocking me off the bike!
Thanks in advance to everyone for the advice!
I can relate to practically being blown off the bike. I put a quick release windshield on my Dyna WG and I love it. It installs/removes in seconds and leaves no mounts on the bike when removed.
I've been riding sense the early "60's" and never had a windshield. They're for "Geezers" and "Sissy's"! Real men don't set behind a windshield!
I just bought an "06" Street Bob, when they pulled it out of the service dept. it had a quick release windshield on it! I told the service guy I never used a windshield before and was not using one now, especially if I had to pay for it!
He told me to ride home with it on and if I didn't want when I came in for my 1000 mile oil change he would buy it back.
So what the h e l l, why not try it.
When I had the 1000 mile done and they brought my bike out the service manger ask if I wanted to sell my windshield. There's no way in the world that's going to happen, I spent 45 years riding without one and I'll not ride another mile without one!
Well a windshield stop all the wind? No, but it will cut it down to bearable plus it stops most all of the bugs, rocks and other things from hitting you in the face. It 's a whole new experience, it raised the fun factor a notch or two.
Go for it you'll never go back, especially if you're going to be riding long distances and with a quick release you can take it off when you want. (mine has never been off!)
I wear a half-helmet. If I'm going over 55 and I don't have my windshield on, I feel like the wind is going to pull my head off. I notice a huge difference with the shield on, so does my passenger.
Last summer I rode out to Sturgis with my buddies (Road King, EGlide, Heritage Springer). We were doing 400-500 miles a day and by the third day (morning) we pulled into an HD dealer in Wisconsin and I picked up a quick detach windshield.
I rarely take it off now especially if I am going to be riding on the intersate or if they are calling for rain.

I never used one before either but mine came with one and I wouldn't be without it. I think I've had it with being beat up just to go somewhere. I will on occasion ride locally without one but I won't go far.
Be aware of the downside, and that is with the quick release windshields, you might experience buffeting at high speed. I took mine out on the highway at 70, and while it was easy to hold on, my head was vibrating so much in the wind that it was tough to see. Haven't been able to get rid of that just yet, but some people have. I'm still trying.
A tip : Make sure your windshield follows the exact angle of your forks, always worked for me. I've had mine up over 90 and no flutter problem, but just to see I changed the angle and boy did I get a front end wobble! did it to prove to myself that the old theory is fact. After your windshield is on you should be able to draw an imaginary line with your forks and glass edge.
