Default leaky hole

I have an '08 Street Bob with dealer installed forward controlls, it has started leaking oil from the shifter shaft hole in the outer primary, is this an easy fix or should i take it back to the dealer?

It's fairly simple. You'll have to drain the primary remove outer cover, replace small gasket and put back together.

it is a pretty easy fix there is a gasket inbetween the outer and inner prymary cases about the size of a quarter, drop your oil take off the outer prymary change the gasket put in a new prymary gasket when your at it and make sure you clean it really well and bolt it back up

Sorry, when I saw the title I thought this might be AARP related.

It's called a tower gasket, it seals the tunnel for the shifter shaft where the inner primary cover mates with the outer primary cover. You need a new one, a $2.00 part. Unfortunately, you will also need a quart of primary fluid, a new primary cover gasket ($30.00), and clutch cover gasket to complete the job. I also have a torque wrench that I used to tighten down the primary cover bolts. The tower gasket has adhesive on one side, you will need to clean off the mating surface on the inner primary with brake cleaner or similar, then stick on the new gasket, then reassemble everything. I did it myself for the "fun" of it but I bet you could make a case that this is a warranty issue, and let the dealer fix it. I think it is a poorly designed part. Without the shift shaft in place, the gasket migrates out of position and then it leaks.

Could also replace the FXD-style inner and outer primary covers with FXDWG-style covers (no mid-control shaft tower ... hence, no leak) ... of course my suggestion would cost somewhere around $300-500 just for the parts depending on where you get them ....

But, you could justify the cost by getting them in chrome ...
