Default Riser Bolt Size And Length

Getting ready to install Jim's Spacers, the manual, as usual, doesn't help all that much. Yeah, I know, just take one off... I haven't started yet and need to do other stuff first, just trying to collect information beforehand.

Now for some questions.

Size and pitch of threads, as I will need new bolts 2" longer.

Can I get away without completely disassembling the clamp, bars, risers?

Can I get away with just removing the riser bolts from the upper tree and installing the spacers?

Bolts are 1/2 13 and if I can remember correctly about 2.5 inches long. Yes, you would only have to remove the bolts and install the new bolt/spacer combo. When I swapped to my Carlini bars I left the risers and everything else connected to my stock bars.

Just make sure you cover your tank with a thick towel or pad of some kind, it may save you a headache and damaged paint.

No doubt!

Torque Spec?? That fantastic book doesn't tell you that either!

It does give it, but the name of it is a bit different than you would expect, sorry don't remember the name, but the torque spec is about 4o ft.lbs
They are 1/2" bolts going into aluminum, but the spec is to keep you from crushing the rubber bushings, I usually don't worry about a spec on those bolts, just crank them down.

Personally I just tightened the s#it out of them. Threads as big as 1/2 13 will pull a lot of torque by design. Mine haven't loosened up yet using that method.

Good point. I believe the bushings had a steel center to prevent crushing the rubber/poly section, but in my case the bolts are now going into steel Carlini bars, so my torque could be higher.

You got it, I usually go until almost all play is out of the risers, greatly differs depending on the type of bars and risers as far as I am concerned.
Different now with T-Bars than when I have 14" apes on 3" risers.
Leave a small amount of play just to absorb some of the vibrations.

Just looked it up in the manual. Lower handlebar clamp torque is listed as 30 to 40 ft-lbs
