Default Gas Overflow

If I top off my tank at all, right afterwards on a sharp right turn I get fuel seeping from the tank cap. Doesn't happen all the time, but at some stations it seems like the pump shuts off way too early. Has anyone else had this issue?

This has been a common question on the board recently. It seems a lot of 09-10's have been having this issue. I think it's a defective gas cap. You might be able to get a new one if you take it into a dealer. OR....just don't fill up the tank so much (that's what I noticed - I would always top it off to the rim).

If your leak happens at all times, not just after a fill-up, then take it in.

A few guys also mentioned pushing down on the cap more while screwing it in makes a difference.

Default Not bad cap

There are other threads on this. It is NOT the cap. It is operator technique. Don't stop tightening when you hear a couple clicks. Give it another 1/2-turn or so. You simply are not tightening the cap enough.

To quote 8541hog from another thread...

I told my doctor it hurts when I do certain things. Doctor replied "stop doing those things."

+1 on the push down while tightening solution. I took my '09 FXDF back to the dealer and they gave me a new cap. New cap did the same thing, so I started pushing down while tightening and it hasn't leaked since.

I think the ratcheting mechanism in the cap is spinning too soon. If you push down, it will spin another 2/3 of a turn before ratcheting.

Took my 2010 fxdwg in for its 1,000 mile service and I had the same problem. They replace the cap and problem gone.

Have to agree with the gas cap theory. Check the mating surface on the tank itself. Sometimes you get a paint lip and that causes a bad seal.

I've turned the cap after I hear the wratcheting, but haven't consciously "pushed down" on the cap. Filled up this morning and didn't top it off ... the gauge shows one notch below full now. I'd like to get the most out of a tank. I'll try pushing down next fill. Goes in for the 5K service next week, I'll mention the cap issue.

I have the same problem. If I top it off it's going to leak. I will also try pushing down and turning a turn or two more next time. Dont you just hate gas on your nice paint!

Took it to the dealer and let them know the cap wasn't sealing. They replaced the cap and I haven't had the issue since.
