for these fricken K&N fiilters to quit drippin.

Mine came in Sat. and I installed it after work Sat. nite.

Having read the posts about the drippage associated with over oiling I thought I only sprayed a moderate amount. Rode Sat nite and Sun morn a large drip. Cleaned it up and rode Sunday. Before I went to bed another drip.Drip to clean up this morn before work and I'll be damned, went out to my bike to get a packl of cigs and another drip to clean up.

And why is the thread for the cover different on the SE filter and the K&N?

I think it's made my hearing go bad also. My son in law rode my bike and said he could really hear the filter sucking air and I don't hear it at all. Too many windy miles I guess.

Oh, and I really like the filter.

Good Luck

Tom

It was my impression that when you buy the filter new, it is already pre-oiled. I put a Big Sucker on my Bob and did not oil it because I thought it was already oiled. I took the filter off the otehr day and noticed a little oil in the carb intake. Am I wrong, and do i need to oil my Big Sucker filter even though it is brand new?

Now you make me wonder. My son asked me what I was doing when I was oiling my filter. He had installed a cold air intake on his jeep with out oiling the filter. I told him he screwed up. Maybe I'm the one screwed up.

Good Luck

If the cotton filter material was the color RED, it was already oiled. There is red dye in the oil...

They come oiled from K&N
No need for more oil until you service it.

No biggie though, just take it off, and either wash and reoil or shake it out real good and wipe it down.

Like someone else already said take it off clean it and re oil LIGHTLY.I have the dry se filter on my Harley but have had many K&Ns on other bikes. There is a service bulliten for the Ford trucks apearantly the K&Ns are a bit over oiled and the oil is comming off and clogging the o2 sensors in thier intakes.Anyway this is the way I do it and it takes awhile; 1rst wash thoroughly,2nd let air dry in the sun, 3rd spray a very light coat, don't worry about completely covering all the pleats like they say in the instructions, 4th let that sit for awhile to soak in.Only lightly respray again to cover areas that were not completely saturated.Or you could just wash it and run it dry.

Thanks for all of your replies. I was worried for a minute that I should have oiled the filter before I put it on new. Here is an extract from the K&N website FAQ page.

17. Do the filters come pre-oiled or must they be oiled before using?

K&N filters come pre-oiled and ready to use. The filter medium is made from layers of white cotton gauze. The oil has a red dye added to show how much is being applied. If the filter looks pinkish-red, it is oiled. It is important that K&N air filters are never used unoiled. This would greatly degrade their filtering ability.

18. Can the cotton gauze shrink from engine heat?

No. You will not have a problem with the material shrinking as long as the proper cleaning solutions and oil are used. K&N filters come with a limited 10-year million-mile warranty.

19. Is it OK to rotate a round filter to get more longevity?

This is perfectly OK and even recommended. Most vehicles have a ā€œfavoriteā€ spot to draw air in from and rotating the filter will keep it clean longer.

20. How do I know when to clean the filter?

The general rule of thumb is that the filter needs to be cleaned when the dirt build up gets as thick as the wire mesh. The usual interval is 30,000 - 50,000 miles depending on driving conditions. We recommend that you check your filter about once a year in normal usage.

I justed cleaned my K&N filter in my truck yesterday. Followed
instructions, oiling the filter is an option according to the paper
work that comes with the recharging kit.
