Troubleshooting advice
After about a year of little to no riding (I blame work and a long distance relationship), I was excited to get back to being able to ride. I've made sure that while "storing" the bike, I rode it at least every three weeks and used a trickle charger to keep the battery up. About two weeks ago I started having some electrical problems I can't quite figure out. I had been riding for a few weeks on a daily basis when one day it wouldn't start after riding for an hour or so. Once I got it back to my house, I pulled the battery to charge it and looked for any obvious issues with the wiring or the ground. I'm not very talented when it comes to working on the bike but I didn't see anything that jumped out at me. I got the battery load tested, says it was ok, and reinstalled. Now when I try to start, all I get is a popping noise on the left side of the bike and the dashboard display goes out. It comes back on sometimes. Other times when I drop the battery the dashboard display will come back on. ( Doesn't even start to turn over).
Now the weird thing is when I drop the battery tray, the engine turns over, or at least tries to. May not really have anything to do with dropping the tray, but thought I would mention it. I thought perhaps the posts on the battery is making contact with the frame, so I wrapped them in Silicon tape to be sure. Didn't make a difference. Next thought was a problem with the cables, but there is no visible damage to the cables.

I had a problem like this, my truble was in the fuses. When the bike was new the HD dealer got the fuse box wet when they cleaned the bike before delivery. I moved the fuses one at a time in and out of the socket a few times to make a better contact. The bike fired right up. So I then got some "Electrical Contact Lub" from Harley (can get at any auto parts). Put a little on each fuse and put back in the bike - 2 years now.
