electrical problem?!

electrical problem?!
so, i started riding to work, and my bike started cutting out. there was a little backfire, then the engine surged a little bit, then completely died. no power to anything, guages, nothin.
i had to walk back home and get to work, so i havent had time to look at it...
a couple weeks ago, it was doing the same thing, so i pulled over and checked the battery connections, and the negative wire was loose, so i tightened it up and havent had any issues since until earlier today.
any thoughts? battery? fuses? something worse? i cant afford to take it to a mechanic, so if it isnt a cheap fix i can do myself, i may be done riding this year : \

Did you check the ground connection on the negative cable, or just the battery side?
Did it throw any codes?
Check all fuses and relays for corrosion.
More info would help, like what bike you have, mods, etc.
