Ya, I've been looking to do this for awhile. The kits out there cost a good chunk of change and are not worth it IMO.

The problem is finding an adapter where the oil filter is currently mounted. The hose and new filter mount are easy to find for like $30 from summit or jegs.

Usually, in my experience with cars where I've relocated the oil filter it's not worth it due to the seals on the adapter and the hoses that tend to break down easily and leak leading to a bigger mess all over your motor compared to just cleaning up the mess from an oil change. A cut up piece of cardboard slid under the oil filter running to your drain pan can help alleviate some, if not most, of that.

Boy, my thoughts exactly. I was installing my oil cooler today which necessitated changing the filter and installing an adapter and I was wondering who in the "you know what" designed the oil filter where it is. I'm sure there are engineering and monetary reasons but it seems like someone could have designed a more vertical position for the filter. I tried the HD orange plastic drain and it worked about as well as Laurel & Hardy. It just didn't fit and the crank position wiring interfered. Even if it was left in the horizontal position if would be great if it didn't drain out all over the frame and front motor mount!!!

Its very do-able. I relocated the filter on my buell XB chopper, I ended up using an adapter that fit a mid 80s Toyota. Filters adapters are pretty simple its only got to have the same thread pitch on the stud and close to the same diameter oring.

Needless to say a relocation kit for my application simply didn't exist so I had to improvise. What I did was I went to K&Ns website and cross referenced the filter part numbers that fit a XB Buell, I ran those part numbers to see what else those filters would fit besides the Buell, it pulled up a list that was literally 3 pages long with different vehicles. I then looked for an adapter to fit any of those vehicles and the one that was most available was a TransDapt made for a mid 80s Toyota Celica, it cost me $45.00 for the whole kit which included the hoses, filter mount and filter adapter. There's always more then one way to skin a cat.

Scotty....I would not have thought of what you did to relocate the filter. That's a darn good idea. Thanks.

I don't know how much easier it could be. Just do the soda bottle trick. Cut it to length, leave the top on so the oil doesn't come out the lid end, put some paper towels around the front mount and go for it.

Most harley shops have the Drag Specialties filter wrench for $9.95 on display. Piece of cake. It has a cut out to avoid the CKP. Before I broke down and bought the DS filter wrench, I had ordered two K&N filters for the bike that have the built-in 17mm (I think) hex head on the end of the filter. Might even be easier when the time comes to change it out.

I got a little oil on the front mount but so what? It's virtually unavoidable. I'm quite certain the dealer does when he changes the oil, too. I just used soap and water to rinse it off. Took the OL's watering pot that she uses for her flowers, filled it with hot water and some Dawn, poured it over the offending area and rinsed. Of course, AFTER the new filter was installed. Can't be too careful giving out instructions around here.

As a bonus, the DS filter wrench fits over my lawn mower filter. Coolness.

unless you're a total putz, you shouldn't be spilling THAT much oil when you take your filter off.

like grendel said, it takes but a minute to clean up the drippings when you're done.
