Default Heat Wrap

I am thinking about wrapping my exhaust. What are the pros and cons to doing this and can anyone give some advice on how to do this exactly, if I decide to go that way.

Ya got a exhaust side shot for us? That might help. Personally I was gonna do it to a 1200 custom but I decided too powder coat and risk the burn. Then ended up putting the heat shields back on. Go figure.

The biggest con is it'll destroy your pipes.

I am currently running stock exhaust, debating between slip-ons with the tape or going all out and getting an all new exhaust. pro with getting the new exhaust is I want something long (to or past the rear axle bolt) and all I can find are chrome pipes and I want all black. I would hate to have to pay for exhaust them have to pay to have them stripped and coated.

there are a lot of posts on here about wrapping pipes but I'll give you a few things to think about.

1. wrapping your pipes won't replace the heat shields, your pipes will still get "very" hot. I cut a piece of my heat shield to put at the top of the rear pipes to keep my thigh a little cooler.

2. the wrap will actually make your "pipe" and the exhaust flowing through it hotter which is why everyone says they will ruin your pipes. I have had mine wrapped for about almost 2 years and have put about 10000 miles on the bike and mine are still fine. I replace the wrap a couple of times a year just to check the pipes.

3. wrap the pipe before getting the wrap wet so you know how much you will need. then cut two strips the length you want and soak them in water. use a vise to hold the end of the wrap (or vise grips and a counter top) pull the wrap out tight and roll your pipes toward the vise keeping the overlap even and the wrap tight. I used the clamps from the heat shields to secure the wrap.

GOOD LUCK AND POST PICTURES WHEN YOU'RE DONE.

Cool

My thoughts exactly...don't care for the short look. There are several manufacturers' out there that make black versions of their popular products: Thunderheader, LSR, V&H, Bub to name a few...

You might want to do a little research into the purpose of wrapped pipes. It's not going to be of any noticeable benefit to a stock motor except change the looks - but if you think it looks cool, go for it.
