Someone enlighten me on the purpose of the exhaust wraps that I see on a lot of bikes. I like the look but does it serve a purpose besides a cosmetic one........I'm sure it's a elementary question...but then again...what's this site for?
The purpose of the exhaust wrap is to retain heat in the exhaust, creating hotter exhaust gases, which are less dense and can exit faster resulting in increased HP.

...It will also make the pipes too hot potentially resulting in cracks or warping. Odds are you're fine, depending on the manufacturer of the pipes of course. You can count on destroying any chrome on the pipes for sure (rusty).
To me, it's more of a cosmetic mod. Sure, you might get a tiny boost in HP but we're not riding around on race bikes.

It's like putting a rear wing on a Toyota Corolla.
As already stated it is for keeping more heat inside the pipe but it will also hold in the moisture when the wrap gets wet. So in time it will ruin chrome, and break down the metal from trapped rust. It is a good insulator but has it's draw backs. I prefer ceramic coating to a wrap.
